Bradie James to call signals for Texans’ defense

When the Texans traded away DeMeco Ryans this offseason, many believed it was to get Darryl Sharpton, who was solid in limited action behind Ryans last year, into the starting lineup. However, they signed veteran Bradie James this offseason and, in a surprise move, have been giving him the 1st team reps over Sharpton, a 2010 4th round pick.

Today, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said James would be the signal caller on defense, which suggests that he’ll not only starter, but play a good amount. James has 4 years of experience in Phillips’ system from Dallas and even though he is 31, Phillips says he “doesn’t see much difference in him” from 2010, Phillips’ last year with the Cowboys. Sharpton might be stuck in nickel duties again this season unless James struggles.
