Jaguars’ Justin Blackmon arrested for aggravated DUI

Justin Blackmon, who the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to draft with the 5th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, was arrested early this morning for aggravated drunk driving. Different from regular drunk driving, aggravated drunk driving is when you drive with a BAC of .15 or higher, as opposed to the .08 limit for regular drunk driving. It obviously comes with a stiffer penalty. Blackmon’s official BAC was .24, which suggests that he was drinking basically all day and night before getting behind the wheel, or drank a tremendous amount in a short period of time.

This is Blackmon’s 2nd DUI in as many years, as he was arrested during his sophomore season at Oklahoma State in 2010, which landed him a one game suspension. It’s unclear at the moment what legal discipline Blackmon will face, but the NFL has said that he is subject to league discipline, even though he is not currently under contract, and that, while they won’t punish him for the DUI he got in college, they will “take his history into account.” He could see anywhere from a 1 game suspension to 3 or 4 games.

The Jaguars have yet to make an official statement on Blackmon’s situation. It’s certainly ironic that Michael Floyd was the receiver who was seen to have alcohol problems in the 2012 NFL Draft, yet it’s Blackmon getting arrested for drunk driving. It’s also ironic that the Jaguars are known for taking clean character guys and the one time they take a chance on one with a past arrest, it hurts them.
