2011 Week 13 Rankings

32(32). Indianapolis Colts 0-11

Curtis Painter has been benched for Dan Orlovsky. Starting with the 62-7 game in New Orleans, Painter has gone 76 of 141 (53.9%) for 735 yards (5.2 YPA), 2 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in 5 games. Meanwhile, Dan Orlovsky has the chance to become the first quarterback in NFL history to make at least one start for two separate 0-16 teams. Orlovsky is 0-8 in his career and hasn’t won as a starter since the 2004 Motor City Bowl at UCONN. He’s also the guy who hilariously ran out of the back of his end zone for a touchdown. And for the record, I think the 2011 Colts are the worst team ever and I say this with the memory of the 0-16 2008 Lions and the 1-15 2007 Dolphins fresh in my mind.

31(30). St. Louis Rams 2-9

After one season of being at least decent, the Rams are back to being terrible and look poised for a 4th top 3 pick in 5 years. If you take out their 7-9 record last year, the Rams are 8-51 straight up since the start of the 2007 season. It’s tough to explain how Sam Bradford, who set all sorts of rookie passing record last year, has just thrown 6 touchdowns in 9 games as a sophomore and can’t beat either Seattle or Arizona at home. Pass protection is obviously their biggest problem, as they’ve allowed a league high 39 sacks, and they’ll have to fix their offensive line in the offseason. The rest, they just have to hope can be chalked up to a sophomore slump and fixed on its own by next season. They have some interesting parts on this team. Maybe they just need to hit the reset button and put it all together in 2012.

30(27). Minnesota Vikings 2-9

The Vikings offense really struggles without Adrian Peterson as they managed just 226 total yards in Atlanta last week and now they have to deal with the Broncos, who surprisingly don’t rank among the league’s bottom in yards allowed, ranking 18th and getting better every week. Toby Gerhart managed just 46 yards on 18 carries last week, though he saved his fantasy day by scoring a touchdown, and overall raised questions about just how he managed the finish 2nd in the Heisman race in 2009.

29(29). Miami Dolphins 3-8

Matt Moore has looked good over his last 4 games, going 70 of 104 (67.3%) for 901 yards (8.7 YPA), and 7 touchdowns to 1 interception. However, Dolphins fans should be really skeptical. Moore has done this before, leading the Panthers to a 4-1 finish in 2009 before stinking up the joint early in 2010 and 2011. He’s not consistent enough to be a good NFL quarterback and Dolphin fans should really be rooting against him at this point. If the Dolphins win too many games or Moore plays too well, Moore will be their starting quarterback in 2012 and it’ll set the franchise back another year. You can’t win a Super Bowl or go deep into the playoffs with him. You at least have a chance with someone like Robert Griffin or Matt Barkley or maybe even Landry Jones.

28(28). Carolina Panthers 3-8

Yikes this Panthers defense is bad! Curtis Painter looked decent against them and almost led a game winning drive. Painter went 15 of 29 for 226 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. They rank dead last in YPA allowed with 8.4. They also rank 26th against the run, allowing 4.8 yards per carry, 24th in total yards with 4107 yards allowed, and 31st in points allowed with 27.7 per game. Cam Newton wants to take all the blame on himself and I applaud him for that, it’s not his fault. Yes, he has had problems with turnovers, 14 interceptions, but his play is the only reason they’ve won any games. If they can build their defense through the draft and Newton matures on schedule, they do have a bright future.

27(26). Kansas City Chiefs 4-7

Tyler Palko has thrown 6 interceptions to 0 touchdowns and despite a completion percentage of 65.3%, he is averaging just 6.3 YPA. In comes the Chiefs savior…Kyle Orton. Ok, maybe not, but he should be better than Palko. The problem is, with all of their remaining games against teams with winning records (Chicago, Green Bay, NY Jets, Denver, Oakland), they’re at best a 5 win team this season. They’re not making the playoffs, so I don’t understand the point of Kyle Orton. Why not see if rookie 5th rounder Ricky Stanzi has anything?

26(24). Jacksonville Jaguars 3-8

The Jaguars have fired their Head Coach Jack Del Rio, albeit 3 years late. Seriously, how was this idiot the 3rd longest tenured coach in the NFL after Andy Reid and Bill Belichick (tied with Marvin Lewis, who also took over in Cincinnati in 2003). The Jaguars were also sold this week, which raises more questions about the possibility of being moved to LA. I don’t think the Jaguars have been this newsworthy in…ever. On top of that, they have a home MNF game against the Chargers this week. Who the hell gave the Jaguars 2 home MNF games this season?! He should be fired and not in 3 years, now.

25(31). Washington Redskins 4-7

Rex Grossman is like New England weather. You can’t possibly predict it, but most of the time it sucks. Grossman has more interceptions than touchdowns on the season with 14 picks to 10 touchdowns and more interceptions than touchdowns in his career, his 54 to 50, along with a mere 55.5% completion percentage and a 6.6 YPA. But, he’s had his moments this year, including last week, winning in Seattle, where New Orleans and Baltimore have lost in the past 2 years and Atlanta almost did. Of course that probably means he’ll be terrible this week, but what do I know. I can’t predict this type of thing. He’s better than John Beck, though, I’ll give him that.

24(23). Cleveland Browns 4-7

The Browns haven’t been awful in the past 3 weeks since their awful showing in Cleveland. They could easily be 3-0 in their last 3, though in typical Browns fashion, they are 1-2, losing 2 games by a combined 4 points, blowing a 10 point 4th quarter lead in one and missing a chip shot field goal for the win in the other. Maybe this video had something to do with their suddenly less shitty play. Also good news, Peyton Hillis is back. This is good because he’s not Chris Ogbonnaya.

23(25). Arizona Cardinals 4-7

Kevin Kolb is expected back this week for the Cardinals, which is interesting. Kolb has a 1-6 record this season, while his backup John Skelton went 3-1. Skelton didn’t play particularly well, completing 50.4% of his passes for an average of 6.4 YPA, and 4 touchdowns to 7 picks, but he won and he did this last season too, going 2-2 for a crappy 5-11 team in 4 starts, despite completing less than 50% of his passes. Kevin Kolb is a better statistical player than Kolb, so one would think they’d improve with him in the lineup, but I don’t know. One thing I do know, if you give someone 63 million dollars, you don’t it to be a legitimate discussion whether to start him or John Skelton.

22(22). Seattle Seahawks 4-7

The Seahawks lost at home to Rex Grossman and the Redskins, who were previously on a 6 game losing streak, but they get the Eagles this week, who will be flat this week off essentially a season ending loss to the Patriots, especially since they have to travel on 3 days rest. Other than the 49ers, this is somehow the best team in the division and they should finish with about 6 or 7 wins.

21(20). Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4-7

This has to be heartbreaking for the Buccaneers. They play a good game in Green Bay and still lose and then blow a 17-10 lead to the Titans in Tennessee, allowing 13 4th quarter points and turning the ball over on their last 2 drives. Now at 4-7, they’re out of the playoff race essentially. They had high expectations coming into the season and actually led the division at 4-2 following a win over the Saints, but they haven’t won since. I don’t know if I like their chances to change that this week against Carolina.

20(19). San Diego Chargers 4-7

The Chargers are a bunch of losers. They’re not bad, they’re just losers. There’s no other way to put it. Their game against the Broncos was so predictable. They looked better than the Broncos, but they still lost in overtime. Meanwhile, the Broncos and Tebow are a bunch of winners. The Chargers have lost 6 straight and are effectively out of the playoff race now at 4-7. Even their wins haven’t been that impressive, beating the Donovan McNabb Vikings, the Kyle Orton Broncos, the Chiefs, who got revenge, and the Chad Henne Dolphins and none of those wins were by more than 10 points.

On top of that, they even have players peeing on the sidelines. If dropping down on one knee in crunch time is “Tebowing”, is taking a piss on live TV in crunch time “Novaking.” Even funnier, Novak missed two field goals that could have won the game. I guess he just pissed the game away.

19(21). Buffalo Bills 5-6

I have no problem with Steve Johnson mocking Plaxico Burress by pretending to shoot himself in the leg after scoring a touchdown. What kind of world would this be if we couldn’t make fun of idiots? The “holier than thou” Bob Costas might have had a problem with it, but that’s because he’s a dick. If Plaxico Burress had a problem with it, he could just make fun of him by pretending to drop a game winning touchdown in his next touchdown celebration because Johnson has done that in each of the last two years.

18(16). Philadelphia Eagles 4-7

The “Dream Team’s” nightmare season is officially over. At 4-7, the Eagles are essentially out of it now after a loss to the Patriots, in heartbreaking fashion after getting out to an early 10-0 lead. DeSean Jackson had an especially bad game, dropping a couple of passes, including a touchdown. Jackson is having an awful year and I think we can blame the Eagles for that. They spent too much money on outsiders and didn’t resign him and that demotivated him. He’s a free agent after the season so I expect him to go elsewhere.

17(18). Tennessee Titans 6-5

The Titans aren’t particularly talented, but they sit at 6-5 somehow and could be in the playoff race until the very end. They don’t have a tough schedule the rest of the week because their division sucks. In fact, they’re the only team in the division who still has the same quarterback now that they had week 1. They have 3 divisional games left and this week go to Buffalo to play the reeling Bills. I still have teams like the Raiders, Broncos, Jets, and Bengals ahead of them, but they might not go away quietly.

16(14). New York Giants 6-5

Tom Coughlin said that if the Giants don’t miss the playoffs, it’ll be a historic collapse. I find this hilarious because they do this every year. I’ve been saying it all year. They always collapse in the 2nd half. Since Tom Coughlin took over in 2004, they are 47-17 in the first half of the season, good for a 73.4% winning percentage. In the 2nd half, they are 24-35, a winning percentage of 40.9%. Now they have the defending champion Packers coming to town. Have fun with that.

15(17). Oakland Raiders 7-4

The Raiders are 7-4, their best start since their Super Bowl season. They haven’t had a very tough schedule, but they’re still a solid team. I have the Broncos ranked higher than them because all Tebow does is win and because the Broncos beat them in Raiders in Oakland, but there’s a possibility that both AFC West teams sneak into the playoffs.

14(15). Denver Broncos 6-5

With a 5-1 record, Tebow has a 83.3% winning percentage this season, the highest of all quarterbacks in the NFL who have made at least 5 games other than Aaron Rodgers himself. In the last two years, the Broncos are 6-3 with Tebow and 4-14 without him. And he’s competing less than 50% of his passes. Why can’t people just except that Tebow doesn’t make sense? Why can’t people just accept that a quarterback who is a below average passer can win in this league because he’s a great leader and motivated and can make things happen on the ground.

He’s opened up the ground game because opposing defenses are afraid of him. How else do you except Willis McGahee looking like a Pro Bowler? He’s motivated his teammates and gotten them all to play hard for him. He’s led a ball control offense that is keeping the defense fresh and the opposing offense off the field. That’s why the defense has been playing so much better lately (and Von Miller is a beast). He’s gotten better in the clutch and just willed this team to win. And he’s not a terrible passer. Remember, his top two receivers are Eric Decker and a running back converted into a slot receiver.

13(9). Chicago Bears 7-4

Isn’t Caleb Hanie supposed to be good? Or at least decent? I thought the Bears had a good enough running game and defense to be at least solid even without Jay Cutler, but Hanie played terrible against Oakland, who doesn’t even have that good of a defense. It’s looking like his performance against the Packers in the NFC Championship game last year was a fluke. Bears fans better hope the rumors that Cutler could return for the playoffs are true.

12(8). Detroit Lions 7-4

The Lions really just have the feel of an immature team. They made all sorts of stupid mistakes against the Packers and Ndamukong Suh got frustrated and stepped on an offensive lineman…er I mean tripped. They haven’t dealt with adversity well all season. After their first loss, Jim Schwartz blew up at Jim Harbaugh because his handshake was too rough. And of course, since their first loss, they’re just 2-4 with wins over the Broncos, before the new Tim Tebow friendly offense, and the Panthers, who led early. They’re going to get destroyed this week coming off a loss in their biggest game of the decade.

11(12). New York Jets 6-5

The Jets ended a two game losing streak last week, but hardly looked convincing in a 4 point win that easily could have been a loss against the lowly Bills. The Jets now sit at 6-5 and they really haven’t looked as good as they have in the past two years this year. They have an uphill battle to make the playoffs as Cincinnati is a game better than them, but they have the easier schedule on tap. The reeling Giants are their only remaining +.500 team and they also play Miami, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Washington. It’s all just a matter of execution now.

10(13). Dallas Cowboys 7-4

With their Thanksgiving win over the Dolphins, Tony Romo is now 18-2 in his career in November. However, there is some room for concert. Tony Romo’s struggles in December are well documented and the Cowboys really didn’t look that great in wins over inferior teams, the Redskins and the Dolphins, needing game winning field goals to beat both. I’d still say they’re in better position, however, than the reeling Giants and with the Eagles out of it, it’s now a two horse race in the NFC East.

9(10). Houston Texans 8-3

I don’t think the Texans will be too much worse off with TJ Yates than they were with Matt Leinart. In fact, they might be better off. Unlike Leinart, Yates seemed interested and capable of throwing more than 5 yards downfield. Leinart went 12 of 16, but for a mere 57 yards. Yates was 8 of 15 for 70 yards. They have a good defense and a good running game so all Yates has to do is not overstep his boundaries and they’ll be at least decent. Besides, the scariest thing is a good team that doesn’t think anyone believes in them. The Texans are that team now.

8(11). Cincinnati Bengals 7-4

Were the Bengals just flat off of back to back divisional losses to Pittsburgh and Baltimore and looking forward to a rematch with Pittsburgh? Or are they simply not as good as they were before they lost Leon Hall? The Bengals had a very underwhelming performance at home against the Browns last week. A few weeks ago, that game wouldn’t have been very close. Last week, the Bengals needed to comeback from a 20-10 4th quarter deficit. They have another test this week as they head to Pittsburgh.

7(7). Atlanta Falcons 7-4

The Falcons are quietly playing very good football of late. In fact, they seem to do everything quietly, but anyway. They’ve won 6 of their last 8 and their two losses were against the Saints and the Packers, both of which they led at either halftime or later. The level of competition in the NFL is really weak this year because of the lockout and because of injuries to guys like Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub, and Jay Cutler, all of whom would be the quarterbacks for competitive teams if they weren’t hurt. There aren’t that many good teams this year. The Falcons aren’t great, but they’re good enough to be a serious contender in a year like this.

6(3). San Francisco 49ers 9-2

The 49ers’ loss to the Ravens doesn’t help their case as one of the league’s elites, though it seems unfair that they had to travel 3 time zones to play a Thursday game against one of the best in the league. I think we’ll get a better feel of whether or not they’re for real after they play the Steelers, but I’m moving them down to 6th, simply because I think all 5 of the teams ranked here above them could beat them. Their signature wins are against two, young, inexperienced 7 win teams, the Lions and the Bengals. Beating someone like the Steelers or the Ravens or any of the teams ranked higher than them here is another story completely.

5(6). Baltimore Ravens 8-3

The Ravens are below the Steelers even though they’ve beaten them head-to-head twice because the Ravens have lost to Tennessee, Jacksonville, Seattle and almost Arizona. Besides, I just trust Ben Roethlisberger more in the playoffs than Joe Flacco. Baltimore plays Cleveland this week. Let’s see if they play down to the level of the competition again.

4(5). Pittsburgh Steelers 8-3

Another reason I like the Steelers more than the Ravens that I didn’t mention under the Ravens thing (because I wanted to save something to write here), the Steelers were banged up on defense. They’ll be healthier in the playoffs, provided Troy Polamalu’s concussions aren’t a serious long term problem, though he could play this week. I think the Steelers would win a rematch, even if it was in Baltimore.

3(4). New Orleans Saints 8-3

I mentioned the Falcons were quietly playing well, the Saints are too. Remember, this team has been the only one even close to beating the Packers this season as they would have sent the opener to overtime had they converted 4th and goal on the 1 and then converted the two point conversion. Their offense looked unstoppable against the Giants and as good as Brady and Rodgers are, Brees actually has more passing yards than them. Brady, Brees, and Rodgers are all on pace to break Dan Marino’s passing yards record. Those are clearly the best three quarterbacks in the league and as such, they are the top 3 teams in my Power Rankings as well. Also, all three have won Super Bowls.

2(2). New England Patriots 8-3

The Patriots have scored 109 points in their last 3 games and their defense has allowed just 18 per game starting with their week 4 game against the Raiders. Their defense isn’t even at full strength so you can expect them to play good defense the rest of the way and with this offense and their experience at quarterback and Head Coach, that’s a scary combination. The Packers have struggled with both the Chargers’ and the Saints’ offense so I think the Patriots do have a shot at beating the Packers in the Super Bowl. I also think the Packers could lose to the Saints in the NFC Championship game.

1(1). Green Bay Packers 11-0

But I won’t predict either of those things to happen. It’s hard not to put an undefeated 11-0 team in first when the next closest team record wise is a 9-2 team quarterbacked by Alex Smith. They’re the favorites until someone proves otherwise and the only way they can do that is by beating them. With a pretty easy schedule remaining, at New York, vs. Oakland, at Kansas City, vs. Chicago, vs. Detroit, the only way they don’t go undefeated is if they rest their starters, which they can do starting week 15 most likely.

49ers interesting

By Michael J Morris

Looking back at last week’s less than stellar performance it looked like the San Francisco 49ers were heading into another week of embarrassment on a night when the greatest 49er of all time had his number retired.

The game started off according to plan, with the back-up center, David Baas, sending the pigskin up and over Alex Smith and into the end-zone, giving the Saints the safety.  With the Saints up 2-0 you would have though the safety would be the match to the New Orleans fire on offense, but the game didn’t go according to script. Although the 49ers did lose 25-22, the 49ers showed that week one was exactly that, week one.

In week one against the Seahawks the 49ers offense was motionless. The 49ers offense which is supposed to rely heavily on the run game was unable to find any holes.  With two rookies, Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis, starting in their first regular season game, Frank Gore couldn’t break off on any of those big runs he did habitually last season.  Alex Smith wasn’t given enough time in the pocket to find any of his receivers and all six 49ers points came from a pair of 23-yard field goals by Joe Nedney.

The 49ers defense was good upfront, keeping the Seahawks to 77 rushing yards, but the secondary was worse than I had expected.  Allowing Matt Hasselback to complete 18 of his 23 passes and find two scores. And by the looks of things, his less talented brother might have had a similar game. I turned off the television last week hoping that the performance was some sort of fluke but found a different team in red and gold playing the defending champion New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

The differences between the play of San Francisco from week one to week two was night and day.  The 49ers were able to move the ball with ease and it showed late in the fourth quarter.

If you were told that a quarterback in this game drove his team down the field in less than 45 seconds you would not have thought Smith, and maybe if you had the options of Smith’s you would have thought Troy Smith. But it was Alex Smith who brought the 49ers down the field to cut the 22-14 lead to two, and ultimately tie the game.  The problem with scoring so quickly and turning a two minute drill into a 41 second drill is that you give one of the best quarterbacks in the league a chance.  Drew Brees took advantage of the opportunity and put the Saints in field goal position, allowing for kicker Garret Hartley to finish the game with a field goal.

Smith found a fan in teammate, Josh Morgan, who caught 6 balls on Monday night.

“He came and commanded the whole huddle, he commanded respect in the huddle,” Morgan said. “He just played a great game. He came in with confidence and kept us going. He kept us upbeat. You couldn’t have asked anything more of him … That’s why they drafted him No. 1.”

Alex Smith looked liked he belonged and if he can string a few good performances together he may fall back into good graces with San Francisco. The 49ers have one of the softer schedules in the league and if they can play like they did on Monday we may have something interesting brewing in the bay, and it’s not a big pot of sizzurp.

That string of games will have to start next week when the 49ers go to Kansas City to take on the 2-0 Chiefs.

A Jets Feast

By Kevin Harrison

It was Thanksgiving Night and the Jets decided they wanted to eat Bengal instead of Turkey as their meal in route to a hard fought 26 to 10 victory setting up a Monday Night Football battle against the Patriots for first place with both teams at 9-2.

There wasn’t a ton to get excited about during the Bengals game.  It was another example of this Jets team not being able to put away and beat up on an inferior team.  However, they did enough to get the victory.

The offense looked a bit lost at times with the same typical poor play calling.  If you need 8 yards for a first down, I’m not sure why Schottenheimer calls plays that are not even close to the first down marker.  This has happened way too much during his reign as offensive coordinator.   This team has way too many offense weapons for us to not be putting up 30 points a game with ease.

But, this has been a magical season so far and with the offense having some difficulties, Brad Smith stepped up his game with a 53 yard touchdown run as well as a game sealing 89 yard kickoff return.

The sad part of this game was that we went into halftime losing after giving up a touchdown to basically end the first half.  However, things changed quickly as the long Smith run to start the 3rd quarter gave this team the lead for good even though the score still remained close for a while.

Special teams then played a major role when a punt grazed a Cincinnati player’s helmet and James Ihedigbo hussled down the field to scoop up the ball.  This made up for a prior Ihedigbo mistake when he roughed the kicker on 4th down extending a Cincinnati drive.  Mr. Touchdown, Santonio Holmes, reeled in another touchdown pass, to extend the lead but a Bengals field goal kept them close only down 7.

Then, the defense really buckled down in the 4th quarter and notched two points with a safety near the end of the game.  Jim Leonard had a huge interception in the 2nd quarter which seemed like ages since the last Jets interception.

But one of the huge stories of the game was the play of Darelle Revis on T.O.  T.O. had called Revis an average cornerback.  Hmmmm.  Three Catches for a pathetic 17 yards Mr. Owens had.  I guess if Revis is just average, T.O. sucks !

Anyway, I don’t want to harp too much on this game.  Now, comes the meat of the schedule and it’s time to see what these Jets are really made of. Bring on the Pats!

Antrel Rolle Giants

The Giants certainly need safety help. None of their safeties could tackle at all last year and they gave up no many big plays both through the air and on the ground. However, Rolle is now the highest paid safety in NFL history after the Giants gave him 5 years 37 million. Rolle is an above average safety, but not greatest safety in NFL history.

Baltimore Ravens

Debate the Ravens’ offseason possibilities in The Football Fan Forum

2010 Preview:

The Baltimore Ravens’ offense has a chance to be one of their best this decade. They haven’t really had a true elite franchise quarterback in a long time, but Joe Flacco has put together two very solid years in his first two seasons as a pro, and with the additions of Anquan Boldin, Donte Stallworth, Ed Dickson, and Dennis Pitta to the receiving corps, he looks poised to break out this year and become, at the least, a top 15, if not top 10 or 12, NFL quarterback. Their running game with Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, and LeRon McClain will once again be one of the best in the league.

Actually, the unit with the most questions this year may be their defense. How will Ed Reed do coming off of an injury plagued season? Is this the year Ray Lewis finally shows his age? How will Terrell Suggs do coming off of a bad year? Will he be able to give their pass rush the spark it needs? All in all, I think this should be one of the best teams in the NFL again this year and they will probably play better than the 9-7 they were last year, with their offseason additions, and the situation going on with Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension in Pittsburgh.

Projection: 10-6 1st in AFC South

Power Ranking: 9

Last season: 9-7

Grade:

#43 RLB Sergio Kindle (Texas)

They did take Paul Kruger in the 2nd last year, but Kindle will really help them to push Terrell Suggs, who looked pretty bad last year after signing a big contract. He won’t be counted on to help right away, but he has more upside than any other rush linebacker in this draft class. If everything works out, they could always trade Suggs, and start Kruger and Kindle, with Jarrett Johnson as a nickel guy.

Grade: A-

#57 NT Terrence Cody (Alabama)

Cody was a great value at this point. The Ravens don’t have a true run stopping nose tackle like Cody. They have guys like Haloti Ngata and Kelly Gregg, but Cody is unlike anything they have. He probably won’t play more than half of their snaps, but he won’t have to do make a Cody sized impact and he provides more much needed youth on their defensive line. Also, the Ravens have a lot of veteran leaders on their squad so if anyone can bring the most out of him and him keep in shape, this team can.

Grade: A

#70 TE Ed Dickson (Oregon)

The Ravens already got a lot of upgrades on their receiving corps this offseason, but Dickson is an upgrade over Todd Heap and a solid value here in the 3rd. They quietly have put together one of the best receiving corps in the league. Joe Flacco likes this.

Grade: A-

#114 TE Dennis Pitta (BYU)

A cornerback would have been preferable, but it’s hard to argue with Pitta’s value here. He gives Flacco yet another weapon.

Grade: B

#156 WR David Reed (Utah)

Reed gives them another young receiver. If Derrick Mason retires before his contract is up, Reed could give them an option across from Boldin. Even if not, Reed provides slot depth behind Boldin, Mason, and Stallworth and he’s a solid value here.

Grade: B-

#157 3-4 DE Arthur Jones (Syracuse)

Jones had been slipping down draft boards this season with injury issues, but there’s no reason he should have been available in the late 5th. He provides good young depth on Baltimore’s veteran defensive line.

Grade: A

#194 OT Ramon Harewood (Morehouse)

I didn’t have him in my top 300, but I can see why they’d take him here. He has huge upside at 6-7 360 and gives them a right tackle if Oher moves to the left side, if Jared Gaither leaves.

Grade: B

Overall:

I really only have one complaint about this draft and that’s that they didn’t get another cornerback, but they drafted so well and so many good players that I can pretty much cast that complaint off and look at their talent. Every single one of their picks filled a need of some sort and had very good value. I think they really made themselves a lot better in the near future and the fear future with this draft.

Grade: A

Key undrafted free agents

RB Curtis Steele (Memphis)

3-4 DE John Fletcher (Wyoming)

Positions of need:

Wide Receiver:

If you thought the Ravens were bad at receiver this year, wait until next year if they don’t get help. The only receiver currently under contract for 2010 is Donte Stallworth who didn’t play at all last year because of suspension and is sure to be rusty. Most of their receivers are restricted and could be back if wanted back, but no receiver other than Derrick Mason was any good last year and he’s an unrestricted free agent. If he isn’t brought back, they’ll have nothing at the position and even if he is, he will be 36 next season and could retire soon. They need some young depth at the very least and I’d like to see the Ravens take 2 receivers early.

Signed Donte Stallworth, Traded for Anquan Boldin, Drafted David Reed (#156)

Cornerback:

After Lardarius Webb went down last year, the Ravens had to start Chris Carr, their kick returner. I’m guessing they don’t want to have to do that again. Webb is good, but Domonique Foxworth was borderline average last year as QBs posted a 79.3 rating against him last year. They also were one of the most penalized secondaries in the league. They need some depth at the position.

Tight End:

Todd Heap was finally alright this year because he didn’t get hurt, but how long can he keep that up for. The Ravens may want to either upgrade him or simply bring in some depth behind him.

Drafted Ed Dickson (#70), Drafted Dennis Pitta (#114)

Rush Linebacker:

The Ravens only had 32 sacks last year. I don’t think it’s so much a lack of talent as it is a lack of motivation at the position, especially with Terrell Suggs. After he got his large contract last offseason, he looked complacent this year and only had 4.5 sacks. They need some young depth at be brought in to challenge Suggs and Jarrett Johnson.

Drafted Sergio Kindle (#43)

Middle Linebacker:

Ray Lewis is getting up there in years while Tavares Gooden is average at best opposite him and there is very little depth behind either. They need to bring some depth in this offseason.

Safety:

I don’t believe Ed Reed when he says he could retire, but Dawan Landry had an awful year last year at strong safety. It isn’t a huge need, but he could be upgraded and if the Ravens, who like taking best available, find a capable safety that they like available to them in the mid rounds, they’ll take him.

Signed Ken Hamlin

Free agents:

QB Troy Smith (restricted)- resigned 1 year 1.1 million

QB John Beck (restricted)- resigned 1 year 1.1 million

FB Le’Ron McClain (restricted)- resigned 1 year 2.4 million

FB Charles Ali

#5 WR Derrick Mason- resigned 2 years 8 million

He’d be rated a lot higher if he wasn’t 36 and didn’t retire for about a week last July. He is the most underrated wide receiver in the league and has been for the entire decade. He has 1000 yards or more in 8 of his last 9 seasons despite playing for the Titans and Ravens, two of the most notoriously conservative teams in the league in terms how much they throw the ball. He has some of the surest hands and in the league and is a phenomenal route runner. He never was much of an athlete, so you don’t have to worry about him losing his speed. He could play at a high level for 2-3 more years, the question is, does he want to?

Bengals Needs 2011

Free agency priorities

Quarterback

Many seem to think Andy Dalton can start next year, but I have my doubts. 2nd round picks at quarterbacks rarely do well in their first year in the league. That’s why they fell to the 2nd round. Just ask Jimmy Clausen. I’m not saying he can’t be the long term solution, but it’s in the best interest of the team to try to bring Carson Palmer out of retirement or explore stopgap options through trade and free agency.

Wide Receiver

Jerome Simpson, AJ Green, Andre Caldwell, Jordan Shipley, Ryan Whalen. What do those 5 receivers have in common? None of them have very much experience. Terrell Owens is not coming back and Chad Ochocinco has a greater chance of suiting up for an MLS team than playing for the Bengals so they’ll need to find a veteran through free agency.

Running Back

Jay Finley and Bernard Scott can’t carry the load so they’ll either try to resign Cedric Benson or go after someone like DeAngelo Williams or Michael Bush.

Draft Needs

Quarterback

Head Coach Marvin Lewis loves Carson Palmer, but I am not a fan. He simply doesn’t have the arm strength necessary to be an elite signal caller thanks to all of his arm injuries. He floats way too many balls, which leads to underthrows, interceptions, and pick sixes. Palmer will probably he back next year, in fact he’s all but assured he’ll be back as the starter next year, but they need to draft a developmental quarterback behind him.

Drafted Andy Dalton (#35)

Defensive End

The play of Carlos Dunlap was one of the few bright points of this 4-12 season for the Bengals. The 2nd rookie pick rookie out of Florida had 9.5 sacks despite not playing regularly until week 10. However, outside of him, they only has 17.5 sacks. 2009 3rd round pick Michael Johnson hasn’t panned out and though Antawn Odom can be an effective pass rushing defensive end when healthy, he’s also had back-to-back years end in season ending injuries and he seemed slow and sluggish last year even before he was hurt. They need a defensive end of the future opposite Dunlap.

Running Back

This was Cedric Benson’s contract year. Apparently no one told him because the former first round pick only averaged 3.5 yards per carry and also had some legal issues. If he’s not brought back, they’ll need to add a running back because Bernard Scott doesn’t seem like he can carry the load. They can address this position through the draft in the mid rounds (we’ve seen teams get talented running backs in the 3rd and 4th rounds a lot in the past) or they can add a free agent like Michael Bush.

Drafted Jay Finley (#246)

Outside Linebacker

Inside linebacker Dhani Jones may be best known as the most random athlete to ever do a popular commercial, but he’s also a free agent this offseason and the soon to be 33 year old likely won’t be brought back so 2009 2nd round pick Rey Maualuga can move back inside to his natural position. That would leave a hole at outside linebacker opposite Keith Rivers. They drafted Roddrick Muckelroy in the 4th round last year with the intention of giving him a shot at winning the job in 2011, but they may bring in some competition for him.

Drafted Dontay Moch (#66)

Offensive Tackle

Andre Smith was supposed to be this team’s left tackle by now after being drafted 6th overall in 2009, but injuries and overall inconsistency in his play have kept him at right tackle. He might not even be fit to play there so they need depth at the very least behind him.

Safety

Roy Williams, Chris Crocker, Gibril Wilson, Reggie Nelson, and Chinedum Ndukwe all play significant time at safety last year, but no one stood out and injuries ravaged their safety depth. They could be looking for at least one young safety to try to step up and become the playmaker this team needs in the middle of the secondary.

Drafted Robert Sands (#134)

Wide Receiver

Terrell Owens is a free agent and the Bengals already said they won’t be bringing him back. Chad Ochocinco has a team option for 2011, but after a down year they may decide he’s not worth it and let him leave. Jerome Simpson really stepped up with 18 catches for 247 yards and 3 scores in the Bengals’ final 2 games last year, with Ocho and Owens out, but across from him, options are limited.Jordan Shipley had a good year, but might be best off staying in the slow. Andre Caldwell caught 15 passes for 270 yards in their final three, but a receiving corps of Simpson, Caldwell, and Shipley is extremely young and inexperienced and thus could be very inconsistent. Palmer might want a veteran guy brought in in free agency if they let Ocho go, and even if they don’t, I could see them adding a young receiver through the draft if they’re not sold on Caldwell or Simpson.

Drafted AJ Green (#4), Drafted Ryan Whalen (#167)

Guard

Part of the reason Cedric Benson struggled on the ground was because of poor interior blocking. Also Bobbie Williams will be 35 next season.

Drafted Clint Boling (#101)

Center

Evan Cook is one of the worst centers in the league and in a division with 3 3-4 teams, the Bengals really need a dominating center to matchup with big nose tackles. If they aren’t sold on 2010 7th round pick Reggie Stephens as their center of the future, they could draft another one or bring one in in free agency.

Bills Wake Up

By Mike “Coast”

The Buffalo Bills got embarrassed by the Minnesota Vikings yesterday 38-14. They got outplayed in every single phase of the game and it wasn’t even close. All of the weaknesses we all knew the Bills had came to fruition. The offensive and defensive lines were horrible, the linebackers were horrible, the quarterback played like backup, the running game didn’t exist and the special teams was horrible.

The Bills offensive line played as bad of a game as I have ever seen in the league. I know, they were hurt by injuries but their starting left tackle played and I hope that this team doesn’t think they are adequate at the position going forward with Demetrius Bell manning the position. Jared Allen was in Fitzpatrick’s face all game. Allen is a top echelon defensive end and I want my starting left tackle to at least look like he belongs in the same league as him. Bell failed his biggest test of the season yesterday miserably.

The Bills rush defense was as horrible as it has been the entire season. Adrian Peterson and his bum ankle led the way to a team 210 rushing yard performance. The Vikings averaged 5.3 yards per carry. The Bills allow 170.9 yards per game. That is 25 yards worse than the 31st ranked defense in the league. 170.9 yards per game is better than only 2 teams since 2002, the 2008 Lions and the 2007 Colts. The Bills have an all time horrible rush defense and there has been little to no improvement during the season. The most troubling part about it is that much of the front 7 will look the same next year.

The Bills will bring back FA Paul Posluszny. Chris Kelsay isn’t going anywhere. Kyle Williams is etched in and the Bills aren’t getting rid of Dwan Edwards anytime soon. I have no problem with bringing back Poz and I like Edwards and Williams, but other than those three guys ugh? Kelsay needs to be cut. Torbor, Ayodele, Coleman…I mean, who are these guys? Stroud should get cut this offseason too. The Bills need 4 new starters in the front 7 and that isn’t going to happen.

Fitzpatrick didn’t have a good day. Yes, he was sacked only once, but Jared Allen and company were in his face all game. I have been a huge proponent of Fitzpatrick. I think he has done a good job this year and I think the argument that he is horrible has no merit. That said, he looked like a back up QB in the league yesterday and maybe that is what he is.

Leodis McKelvin had the worst 5 minutes of football I have ever seen. He got burned on a 50 yard bomb by Sydney Rice, fumbled the ensuing kickoff and then got called for pass interference in the end zone on the next drive on 3rd and goal. To make things even more embarrassing for McKelvin, he actually celebrated on an incomplete pass thrown his way later in the game. McKelvin had an interception later in the game off a deflection and he celebrated that play too. How dumb is this person? The Bills were losing by 31 points and McKelvin had the worst game a cornerback has played in a while and he is celebrating plays in the 2nd half? Give me a break. What a freaking embarrassment, holy crap.

So where is this team going to go the rest of the season? The Bills play the Browns next weekend. The Browns beat the Patriots and Saints this year, two better wins than the Bills have had in the past 7 years. The Bills go on the road to play Miami the week after that before they finish the season with New England and the Jets. Based on how things look right now, these two teams will be playing for the division. The Bills are looking at 4-12 at best, 2-14 at worst but most likely 3-13.

Will this be enough to get the first pick? Carolina finishes the season with the Falcons and Cardinals at home and then travel to Pittsburgh and to Atlanta. If they can somehow beat a terrible Cardinals team and get the Falcons backups in week 17, they could get to 3 wins, but that is the most they will get. I don’t think that the Bungals or Lions will draft a QB so it depends on what happens with Carolina.

The Bills have a few things working against them. Carolina will have an easier strength of schedule than the Bills which is the first tiebreaker . Also, it is likely that the Panthers will have a new coach who will probably want his QB. The Bills only chance is to lose the rest of their games.
