Jets Schedule

By Kevin Harrison

1. Not sure why the Jets and Giants are not playing on 9/11 for the 10th anniversary but I have no problems playing the Cowboys to beat “America’s Team” on this very special evening home opener.  This will be a battle of minds: Rex Ryan vs. Rob Ryan.

2. Love that the Jets play the Giants at home on Christmas eve which is a Saturday.  This won’t mess up my annual day on Christmas at the Movies as well.

3. Having FIVE prime time games is rough but the wife loves it as that’s five Sunday’s that are not messed up.  (Dallas at home in Week 1, a Sunday night in Baltimore (Week 4), a Monday night home game against the Dolphins (Week 6), a Sunday night home game against the Patriots (Week 10) and a Thursday night game in Denver (Week 11).  Three are at home, two are away.

4. How can the NFL schedule the Jets at home on Sunday night vs. the Patriots and then FIVE days later a ROAD Thursday night game in Denver?  So, basically, you watch film on Monday.  You don’t get your typical Tuesday off and have to practice just Tuesday and Wednesday and then leave Wednesday night for a Thursday game.  That’s rough.

5. Love that we start the season at home for two straight games but the NFL gave us THREE straight road games after that.  And the three road games are not easy – in Oakland which is always an issue for Gang Green, and then in Baltimore and then in New England.  OUCH!

6. You can’t complain about the first three games of the year being against non-playoff teams – Cowboys, Jaguars, and Raiders.

7. For the entire schedule, there are only FIVE games against playoff teams – Patriots (2 X), Ravens, Eagles, and Chiefs.

8. We get another shot at the Ravens after playing scared against them to open up the 2010 season.  I love that this is a night road game since Oct. 2 is my birthday so I can still be with the family for a good dinner and celebration.

9. The Bye week falls at a perfect time during Week #8.

10. The Jets have only two long flights this year, at Oakland and at Denver.

11. I love that the Jets don’t play at home to end the season for the first time in a few years in the freezing cold as then end this year in Sunny Miami.

12. In the last 5 games of the year, the Jets only play an AFC East opponent once and that’s the finale in Miami.  Shouldn’t the last quarter of the season be against divisional opponents.

13. Jets play the Chargers in the 1st half of the season where the Chargers mostly stink the first half of the season.

14. There are NO 4:15 pm home games. All home games are either at night or at 1:00 pm

15. In a 4 week span towards the end of the season, the Jets play three out of the four NFC East teams – Redskins, Eagles, and Giants.  We should be playing AFC East teams at this part of the year.

Josh Hull Out

By Vince Vitale

Well it seems like if the St. Louis Rams did not have bad luck they would not have any luck at all. After losing several players to injury on Sunday the Rams have now lost LB Josh Hull who tore his ACL in practice today. Hull has been placed on IR and will be lost for the season. With Chris Chamberlain fracturing a toe against the Cardinals the Rams are now down to 4 healthy linebackers James Laurinaitis, Na’il Diggs, Larry Grant, and David Vobora for the game against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. As I continually state the lack of depth on the St. Louis Rams will play a major role in their 2010 season and early injuries certainly will not help.

Kevin Kolb Cardinals

Trade for Arizona: Next to Derek Anderson, I guess any quarterback is worth a 2nd round pick, a legitimate starting cornerback who is still only 25, and a long term extension worth 5 years 63.5 million dollars with 21 million in guarantees. Kolb is not worth that. He’s put up mediocre stats in Andy Reid’s offense, an offense that makes quarterbacks look better than they are. Remember when the Dolphins traded a 2nd rounder for AJ Feeley? How’d that work out? Plus, he’s already 27 next month so it’s not like he’s got a ton of untapped potential.

The reason I don’t hate this move is because Larry Fitzgerald wanted Kevin Kolb. Larry Fitzgerald is a free agent after next season. If they had waited until next offseason, Fitzgerald could have easily left. Sure, they could have traded a 2nd or a 3rd for Kyle Orton and hoped that would have been enough to please Fitzgerald, but Fitz specifically requested Kolb, which is probably why Philadelphia was able to drive the price up so high. The Cardinals didn’t have a choice.

Now they need to sign Fitz to a long term deal. If they don’t, they risk him realizing Kolb isn’t actually that good and then Fitz leaving anyway after what’s probably going to be an 8-8 season. I have mixed feelings all around on this one. They way overpaid, but they kind of had to. This move is a good move if they can convince Fitz to sign an extension in the next few days or weeks, but if they can’t, then it’s a horrific move.

On one hand, Fitzgerald is not a quarterback and it might not be smart to let a non-quarterback run your team like this. On the other hand, Fitzgerald is their best player. He had 1137 receiving yards last year even with all the crap they had at quarterback. He’s never been a diva. In fact, he was willing to take a pay cut if it meant they could resign Anquan Boldin. If he wants Kolb, it’s not because he’s worried about his stats. It’s because he wants to win and he doesn’t want to go through another 5-11 season.

I’m averaging everything out and giving them a C.

Grade: C

Trade for Philadelphia: This move has upside for Arizona, but it’s highway robbery for Philly. They drafted Kolb with a 2nd 4 years ago and he hasn’t done much to prove he’s a franchise quarterback since then, and yet they were not only able to recoup their 2nd rounder, but they got a legitimate starting cornerback in DRC who is only 25 years old. Cornerback was a huge need of theirs.

Grade: A

LenDale White Seahawks

Deal for Seahawks: LenDale White is a risk, but the Seahawks pretty much give up nothing to get him, moving down from 104 to 111 in the 4th round to get him. If anyone can bring LenDale White’s talent back out, it’s Pete Carroll so I really like this move, coupled with their trade for Leon Washington. The Seahawks have stablized the running back position for a 5th rounder and a swap for 4th rounders.

Grade: A

Deal for Titans: What’s the difference between Alterraun Verner and Walter Thurmond. 7 picks, and apparently LenDale White. I know the Titans were done dealing with him, but they pretty much got absolutely nothing out of this deal. White still has some talent. The Titans could have at least gotten an extra pick in the process to use on a replacement. Who is going to spell Chris Johnson in the backfield now? He can’t carry the load on his own.

Grade: C-

Marcus Cannon Scout

Guard/Offensive Tackle

TCU

6-6 349

Draft board overall prospect rank: #104

Draft board overall guard rank: #10

Overall rating: 67 (early 4th)

40 time: 5.20

4/26/11: Cannon has been diagnosed with lymphoma and will undergo 12 weeks of chemotherapy. Best of luck to him in his recovery, but I’m moving him down for obvious reasons. 12 weeks puts us in late July, at best, and chemotherapy isn’t exactly something you can just come off of and be in game shape immediately.  I had a late first round grade on him. I’m dropping him to the 3rd round because this really is a talented player and pro athletes have bounced back from lymphoma before (Jon Lester) and had great careers.

3/15/11: Marcus Cannon has been TCU’s left tackle for a few years, protecting Andy Dalton’s blindside for one of the most explosive offenses in the league. However, with his weigh in the 360s and 370s, it looked as if he would have to move inside at the next level. Cannon has done a good job of losing about 20 pounds this offseason to get to 349. He ran very well at The Combine for his size and looked to be in very good shape for his weight both in his weigh in and during drills.

He looks sluggish on tape, but not incredibly sluggish and I think this guy could be a right tackle in the right scheme. If not, he’s a guard and most teams will still look at him as a guard. He’ll be a dominant run blocker and an immovable object no matter where he plays. I think he has a very solid future in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins Preview

By Paul Smythe

Training camp is finally here.

Now we can finally watch football again and follow position battles on the Miami Dolphins that we have been discussing for months. No longer are we just speculating about certain situations. Now we can actually see how the situations unfold. Situations like who will step up as a starting free safety and who will emerge as starters on the defensive line.

I am no longer bored. The Miami Dolphins have come to the rescue.

And, as the Dolphins enter training camp there is much optimism by the players about how they will perform this year. There is also a whole lot of optimism among Dolphins fans. This is one of the best Dolphins teams we have seen in years.

Think about it. Is there any team that has looked this good to you in the last ten years?

The funny part about that is that most people outside of the Dolphins fans underrate Miami. They don’t predict much from South Beach in 2010. If you take away the article written by Michael Lombardi on NFL.com then there really isn’t much else outside of Miami that gives the Dolphins any kind of good prediction.

Don’t worry. Predictions mean nothing when it comes to game time. Sure, they are a good indicator of how a team will perform when they do play, but they are definitely not 100% accurate. Nowhere close.

One thing I am sure of is that this will be a better year than last. Of that I am absolutely certain. We have only gotten better.

While other analysts have been paying attention to the New York Jets and New England Patriots they have been missing out on the best team in the AFC East. They will find out soon enough, though.

Miss State/Arkansas

Spotlight #1: Arkansas DE Jake Bequette

Spotlight #2: Arkansas WR Joe Adams

1st quarter

12:18: Bequette pancaked on a bull rush.

11:41: Bequette blocked off the play for a big gain to his side.

10:30: Bequette with a sack. Unblocked, missed assignment by the line.

9:50: Bequette with a pressure, forces a hurried throw and an incompletion.

2nd quarter

13:23: Jonathan Banks with a strip sack in the red zone, returned 52 yards by big defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.

6:32: Adams with his first catch of the game, a check down in the flat, surrounded by 2 guys who bottle the play up immediately for a loss and a fumble, recovered by Arkansas. Loss of 13.

5:01: Fletcher Cox with a blocked field goal. The junior defensive tackle has 9.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks on the season at 6-4 300 and would be one of the top defensive tackles in this weak draft class should he declare early.

2:40: Greg Childs has been hurt, but he was once a potential 2nd day pick. Here he has 3 consecutive catches before leaving the field. All 3 were impressive. The 2nd was a nice pluck against tough coverage and on the 3rd he caught it short and laid out for extra yards.

2:16: Joe Adams with a catch along the sideline for 8 yards.

2:04: Joe Adams burns a safety deep for a 32 yard touchdown, nice catch in the end zone. The safety was playing deep, but took one misstep up and Adams burned him. Still a nice over the shoulder catch by Adams as he didn’t have a ton of separation. He wasn’t completely wide open, but overall a great play that shows his speed and pass catching abilities.

1:00: Joe Adams showing nice abilities in the open field for a 29 yard gain after a dump off, but called back after a facemask penalty by a teammate.

3rd quarter

5:30: Joe Adams, who was taken out of the game earlier after being hit in the eye with the ball on a low bounce, doesn’t have his helmet on on the sideline. He doesn’t look like he’s coming back in up 31-10. I’ll be focusing a little bit on Jarius Wright for the remainder of the game. Wright has 7 catches for 90 yards to this point.

4:18: Wright with a reception for about 7 or 8 short of the first down sticks.

3:06: Greg Childs looking a little slow still trying to catch up to a deep ball in the end zone. He’s still not 100%.

1:16: Tramain Thomas almost got his 5th pick of the year, but bobbles and drops it.

4th quarter

11:42: Bequette with a good pass rush move, could have gotten pressure had it not been a screen play.

10:25: Bequette just misses a sack, forces the quarterback up where he’s sack by a rusher from the other side.

8:44: Bequette with a sack fumble. He was unblocked as Arkansas’ blitz on 4th and 9 just confused Mississippi State’s offensive line.

0:00: Bequette has really been coming on in recent weeks, especially as a pass rusher and he continued that tonight. Bequette, who had 7 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in 2010, is now had 8 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss on the season in 2011, despite missing 3 games with injury. He now has 7 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss in his last 5 games, playing Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Mississippi State.

Bequette also held up well against the run for the most part. Arkansas held Mississippi State and Vick Ballard to 84 yards on 32 carries. Ballard rushed for 54 yards on 13 carries, in what wasn’t his best game of the season. He still looks like a mid rounder. Bequette has good size at 6-5 270, runs a 40 in the 4.7s, has a good motor and has really come on in these last few games. He’s a 3 year starter, a 4 year contributor, and an all-around high character guy. He looks like he could end up in day 2 of the NFL Draft if he keeps this up.

Offensively, Arkansas has 3 great wide receivers. Joe Adams is the speedy one. Jarius Wright is the possession receiver. Greg Childs is the biggest of the 3, but he hasn’t been healthy this season. Let’s start with Adams. Adams only played 2 and a half quarters, leaving with an eye injury that probably won’t cost him any games moving forward. He might have come back in this one had Arkansas not been blowing Mississippi State out.

Adams had 3 catches for 29 yards, including an impressive deep touchdown. On the season, Adams now had 46 catches for 595 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season, as well as 3 punt return touchdowns. He has three years of good production and is amazing in space, as he showed in this one on a 29 yard gain on a dump off, in which he reversed field and turned nothing into yards. It was called back by penalty, but it still showed his ability in space.

He should run in the 4.3s, and combine that with his ability in space, his special teams ability, and his 3 years of production, he could be a day 2 pick as a speed receiver/special teamer. NFL teams are always looking for the next DeSean Jackson or Mike Wallace and they may see Adams as potentially that guy.

Jarius Wright could also be a day 2 pick. He’s not very big (5-10 180) or fast (4.4/4.5), but he is very productive and he has great chemistry with Tyler Wilson. He has 3 years of good production and is currently Arkansas’ all time leading receiver. This season, he has 61 catches for 1002 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games. He looks like a slot receiver or a possession #2 receiver at the next level.

Childs had 48 catches for 897 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2009 and then had an awesome 2010, with 46 catches for 659 yards and 6 touchdowns in just 8 games, missing the last 5 with injury. That injury was a torn patellar tendon and it has slowed him this season as well. He’s missed 4 games, in 3 different stints, but even when he’s played, he hasn’t looked right and he hasn’t been on the field very much. He had a very good 3 catch stretch in this game that showed what he can do when he’s right, but on the season, he has 13 catches for 152 yards and no scores. Once a potential day 2 pick, the 6-3 215 pound Childs looks like a mid-late round flier.

The guy throwing to all of these receivers was Tyler Wilson. Wilson is having a fantastic season in his first season as a starter, completing 63.1% of his passes for 8.4 YPA and 21 touchdowns to 5 picks. He’s clearly got a great arm and is showing good leadership and intelligence, running Bobby Petrino’s Pro Style offense.

There were times in this one when his awesome receiving corps really helped him out, catching not the most accurate passes, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does next season, assuming he comes back (he most likely will as he only has a year of starting experience), without Childs, Wright, and Adams. If he plays well next year, he could be an early draft pick, competing with the likes of Aaron Murray, Tyler Bray, Robert Griffin (should he return), to be the first quarterback off the board.

On the Mississippi State side, they have two stud juniors on their defense, Jonathan Banks and Fletcher Cox. Both had a big part in a big fumble recovery for Mississippi State. Banks, a cornerback, forced it on a blitz and Cox recovered it, looking very good in the process returning it 52 yards. He certainly didn’t look like a 6-4 300 pound defensive tackle on that one. Cox has 44 tackles, 10.5 for loss, and 4 sacks on the season. Banks has 12 picks in 3 seasons, including 5 this year. At 6-2 185 pound cornerback also has 3 sacks and a punt return touchdown on the season. Both would likely be 2nd round picks if they declared this year, but could be 1st round picks if they returned for their senior seasons.

17. New England Patriots- OT Tyron Smith (USC)

This will be a tough one between Tyron Smith and Cameron Jordan for the Patriots. I think they’d feel fortunate to have one or the other available at 17, but both are in this mock. That’s what an early run on quarterbacks will do. I think offensive line will be seen as a bigger need for the Patriots here. They need to keep Tom Brady upright and they have stopgaps like Marcus Stroud and Gerard Warren at end. If Matt Light leaves, they don’t have the same luxury at offensive tackle.

Other options:

Cameron Jordan- As I already mentioned, Jordan is the other option. He could be their Richard Seymour for the next 10 years.

18. San Diego Chargers- 3-4 DE Cameron Jordan (California)

Cameron Jordan would be the logical choice here. Defensive end and rush linebacker are their two biggest needs and they aren’t going to admit a mistake on Larry English by taking another rush linebacker in the first two years after taking English in the first. Cameron Jordan could go as high as 9 to Dallas and fills a major need. Of course, the Chargers don’t always make the logical move. They always do something to tear a hole in everyone’s mock, whether it’s a trade down and the selection of someone no one had on their radar. I’ll elaborate in the other options section.

Other options:

Trade up- With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, they’re in position to try to move up if there’s someone they like. That someone could be JJ Watt at 9 and Dallas is known to be shopping the pick.

Cameron Heyward- They’re also known to like Cameron Heyward, but they wouldn’t take him over Cameron Jordan…right?

Jonathan Baldwin- They don’t have either of their starting receivers signed long term so they could take a receiver here. Baldwin has the size they like in a receiver and could cause San Diego to look past his character issues. They’ve reached for receivers in the first before (Buster Davis).

Anthony Castonzo- If they fall in love with Anthony Castonzo, he could be the pick. They have a need on the right side and, though they could fill that need in the 2nd or the 3rd, they might pull the trigger on Castonzo.

19. New York Giants- OT Anthony Castonzo (Boston College)

I’ve been reluctant to put Anthony Castonzo here, but too many people in the know have him here so for to put it off any longer. I still believe they should give William Beatty more of a shot at left tackle, but they seem to think of him as their right tackle of the future. Castonzo steps in at left tackle and allows David Diehl to move to guard, which is a big need of theirs. With Mike Pouncey off the board, the decision should be pretty easy for New York.

Other options:

Mark Ingram- Ingram’s range starts at 19 according to many experts.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DE Adrian Clayborn (Iowa)

I’ve had Justin Houston here in recent weeks, but he tested positive for marijuana at The Combine and the Buccaneers are currently going through a bad situation with Aqib Talib, who had drug problems in college and now, years later, is facing 5 years in jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Buccaneers are known to like Clayborn and badly need defensive end help after managing just 54 sacks in the last 2 seasons combined.

Other options:

Justin Houston- They could still take Houston. Weed isn’t a huge problem for non-quarterbacks unless they start thinking they’re above the law and committing actual serious crimes.

Da’Quan Bowers- Bowers is the other end in this range, but they don’t seem to be high on him.

Trade up: If Robert Quinn is sitting there at 10 and Washington wants to move down, they’ll definitely be on the phone with the Redskins.

21. Kansas City Chiefs- OT Nate Solder (Colorado)

The Chiefs are known to be pretty high on Nate Solder and I’ve definitely considered a tackle here in recent mocks, with Anthony Castonzo here in my last upside. If they like Solder, I completely understand the logic. Brandan Albert struggles at left tackle and the regime that drafted him in the first in 2008 is gone. He’d make a better right tackle, where they also have a major need. Solder could play right tackle right away and then swap positions with Albert when ready.

Other options:

Akeem Ayers- With Mike Vrabel at the end of his line, they could take Ayers, a younger version of Vrabel, in my opinion. Tamba Hali is a great pass rusher, but if they could add another #2 rush linebacker opposite him, especially one like Ayers who is versatile and can do other things besides rush the passer, that would help this team a lot.

Phil Taylor- Scott Pioli passed on BJ Raji for Tyson Jackson in 2009. He passed on Terrence Cody twice in the 2nd last year. He might not want to pass on Taylor so he can grab his Vince Wilfork, like he had in New England.

22. Indianapolis Colts- OT Derek Sherrod (Mississippi State)

Assuming Mike Pouncey is off the board, I can’t see this being anything other than any offensive tackle. They have already admitted they should have taken Rodger Saffold in 2010 at 31, over Jerry Hughes. Teams rarely admit mistakes on first rounders, especially after just one year, so you know they’re serious. Sherrod, who they are known to like, would be their do-over and would fit their history of drafting offensive players early to help Peyton Manning.

Other options:

Gabe Carimi- Carimi is the other available offensive tackle in this spot.

23. Philadelphia Eagles- CB Jimmy Smith (Colorado)

The Eagles have brought in the great Howard Mudd to fix their offensive line. They could still go with a tackle like Gabe Carimi here, but with other needs, I think they ignore the offensive line in the first and let Howard Mudd work his magic. Plus, Carimi isn’t a great fit for Mudd’s blocking scheme. Jimmy Smith gives them a much needed upgrade at cornerback opposite Asante Samuel, with Ellis Hobbs retiring due to a neck injury. He has character concerns, but they’ve looked past character concerns before with guys like Michael Vick.

Other options:

Gabe Carimi- Carimi is still an option.

Benjamin Ijalana- Ijalana is a late riser in this draft process and fits Mudd’s scheme better than Carimi.

24. New Orleans Saints- DE Da’Quan Bowers (Clemson)

Bowers knee injury has dropped him out of the top ten and many experts are speculating that his range doesn’t even begin until 20. I, personally, wouldn’t take him in the first round and give him a first rounder’s contract, given what I know about his knee, but I’m not a doctor. If the Saints’ doctors aren’t too scared of Bowers’ longevity with his knee, he’s worth the risk at 24 for a team that’s in a position to take a risk and that desperately needs defensive line help. They said they would have taken Jerry Hughes at 32 last year had the Colts not taken him at 31.

Other options:

Muhammad Wilkerson- A different position, but the same idea, upgrade the defensive line. Defensive tackle and defensive end are both major needs of theirs.

Phil Taylor- Taylor is a different option at defensive tackle. They’ve brought in Shaun Rogers at defensive tackle, a sign that they don’t mind bigger defensive tackles. Taylor would be the long term fix, whereas Rogers is just a stopgap at this point in his career.

Justin Houston- Houston is another option at defensive end if they’re scared off by Bowers’ medical, but really want to go defensive end in the first round.

Brooks Reed- If they really want to go defensive end in the first round and are scared off by Bowers’ medical and Houston’ positive drug test, Reed is the 3rd end, but he’s a reach at 24.

25. Seattle Seahawks- OT Gabe Carimi (Wisconsin)

I’ve had quarterback here in recent weeks, but given all they gave up for Charlie Whitehurst, they’re probably going to be stubborn with him and give him a shot to win the starting quarterback job for the future even though he really struggled last year. If they don’t go quarterback, Carimi makes a lot of sense. He’s probably only a right tackle, but the Seahawks only need a right tackle with Russell Okung on the left side and he’s a really, really good right tackle. There’s a lot of value in having two bookend tackles for the future.

Other options:

Ryan Mallett- If they admit their mistake on a Whitehurst, Mallett seems to make the most sense of the available quarterbacks. The Seahawks have looked past character problems before and Mallett has by far the most talent of any quarterback available.

Christian Ponder- If not Mallett, Ponder is a really good fit for their scheme.

26. Baltimore Ravens- 3-4 DE Cameron Heyward (Ohio State)

The Ravens managed just 27 sacks last year with 11 of those coming from Terrell Suggs and 5.5 coming from Haloti Ngata, meaning the rest of their team only managed 11.5 sacks. They badly need a 3rd pass rusher and have mentioned pass rusher as a focus of their draft. They’re known to like Cameron Heyward, who would give them an upgrade over Cory Redding and his 2.5 sacks.

Other options:

Muhammad Wilkerson- Their board seems to be Derek Sherrod, Cameron Heyward, Gabe Carimi. That might not be accurate and Wilkerson could be rated higher than Heyward at the same position.

Justin Houston- They might look past his positive drug test and take the talented rush linebacker here. He’d give them a 3rd pass rusher and makes sense if they have given up on Sergio Kindle, their 2010 2nd round pick who fractured his skull and might never be able to suit up for them.

Akeem Ayers- If they don’t look past Houston’s drug test, Ayers is another rush linebacker option.

Brooks Reed- If they don’t look past Houston’s drug test and want a more proven pass rusher, Reed is another rush linebacker option.

Trade down- The Ravens have shown a willingness to move down in recent years and a quarterback hungry team might find the 26th pick attractive.

27. Atlanta Falcons- TE Kyle Rudolph (Notre Dame)

This has become a popular pick in recent days and some are even saying that the Falcons have locked in on Kyle Rudolph, who probably wouldn’t go before this pick. Tony Gonzalez could be done after next season and he struggled late last year managing more than 4 catches twice after week 9, including a 1 catch performance in their playoff loss to Green Bay.

Other options:

Brooks Reed- Defensive end is a major need of theirs and Reed fits what they like in a player, good motor, proven in college, blue collar, team captain, played in a major conference.

Justin Houston- Houston might be more talented than Reed, but they’re not going to like his failed drug test.

28. New England Patriots- 3-4 DE Muhammad Wilkerson (Temple)

After passing on Cameron Jordan for Tyron Smith at 17, defensive end is a major possibility here at 28. Wilkerson is the last of the first round 3-4 ends and could end up being their Richard Seymour for the next 10 years.

Other options:

Justin Houston- They’ve looked past failed drug tests before (Brandon Tate, Aaron Hernandez), but with Houston, Reed, and Ayers all still available, they can probably get a good first round caliber rush linebacker at 33. You can’t say the same thing about 3-4 defensive end.

Trade down- The Patriots love to trade down and are known to be shopping this pick. A team desperate for a quarterback could give them a future first, which could end up being a top 10 pick in 2012 with a rookie salary cap. No big deal.

29. Chicago Bears- DT Marvin Austin (North Carolina)

Given how badly Jay Cutler was beat up last year, 56 sacks in the regular season, they’re probably praying a first round tackle falls here and even if one doesn’t, Benjamin Ijalana could be the pick here, though he’d be a slight reach. I’m not mocking Ijalana here though. They love Marvin Austin and he also fills a major need of theirs, defensive tackle, after they cut Tommie Harris.

Other options:

Benjamin Ijalana- Offensive line is the bigger need and Ijalana isn’t a huge reach at this point in the draft.

Stephen Paea- Paea is the other defensive tackle I’ve heard linked to this spot.

30. New York Jets- NT Phil Taylor (Baylor)

Rex Ryan reportedly likes Phil Taylor and I can definitely understand why. Taylor is 330 pounds, but plays like he’s in the 290s. He can be the big run stuffer than Kris Jenkins was and Sione Fouha isn’t and he can also play some end in a 3-4 and rush the passer more, which is another need of theirs. Rex Ryan will love his versatility.

Other options:

Justin Houston- The Jets might look past his drug test and see him as a really talented pass rusher who fits with what they want to do in terms of blitzing the quarterback.

Akeem Ayers- Ayers is a cleaner rush linebacker prospect and more versatile than Houston, but not as great of a pure pass rusher.

Brooks Reed- With all of the 3-4 ends that could go in the first round off the board, if this isn’t a nose tackle, it’s a rush linebacker. Reed is another option, cleaner than Houston, and a better pass rusher than Ayers.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- CB Aaron Williams (Texas)

I know, the Steelers don’t take cornerbacks in the first round, but they’re not stupid. They know why they lost to the Packers. It’s the same reason they lost to the Patriots and the Saints. Teams that can spread them out can neutralize their blitz and pick on their corners. It’s a changing game and the Steelers have to adjust their draft strategy and it really seems like they will as this is becoming a popular choice with those in the know. They won’t take Jimmy Smith with his off the field issues and they won’t take Brandon Harris, who doesn’t fit the scheme well with his lack of size.

Other options:

Benjamin Ijalana- If they want to upgrade the offensive line, Ijalana isn’t a huge reach. They’re defensive minded when they draft, however.

Trade down: They could probably get Aaron Williams a few spots later so if a quarterback hungry teams wants to trade up, the Steelers could be willing to listen.

32. Green Bay Packers- RLB Akeem Ayers (UCLA)

Clay Matthews is a beast. What’s even more impressive is the fact that he’s doing what he’s doing with a legitimate #2 pass rushing linebacker opposite him to take the pressure off of him. Imagine their already deadly defense with another pass rushing linebacker. Ayers’ is a good #2 pass rusher and has the versatility than Dom Capers loves in a defensive player.

Other options:

Justin Houston- Houston is another rush linebacker option if they choose to look past his drug test.

Brooks Reed- Reed could also be in the mix as a rush linebacker.

Trade down: The Packers are no strangers to trading down and if they can’t differentiate much between the 3 linebacker, they could move down a few slots with a quarterback needy team and take a linebacker then.

This is probably my last update before the draft. If, for whatever reason, I have to, I will update tomorrow before the draft.

2011 Senior Bowl Wed

QB Colin Kaepernick UP

Having the best week in practice of any north QB, including Jake Locker. He’s got a good chance, with a good game on Saturday, to move himself up a couple rounds from round 6 to around round 4. Still a huge project, but I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. The arm strength is there, the athleticism is  there, the delivery has improved, his mechanics and his footwork need the most work, and he struggles with touch, but there’s a lot of potential there.

RB Derrick Locke UP

Not a lot you can tell about a running back without full speed tackle from the defense, but he looks fast and explosive and is separating himself from the large amount of 3rd down/kick return type backs in this class. Intrigued to see him play full speed on Saturday.

RB Kendall Hunter UP

The north’s version of Derrick Locke, with better size. Hunter has shown good burst out of the backfield. Also was the most impressive back in pass protection, which was surprising at his size, 5-7 199. That helps him tremendously as a third down back. I think he could have a huge day Saturday and make himself a 3rd rounder.

RB Bilal Powell UP

Another running back who has done well in practice that I’m looking forward to seeing on Saturday. Drew Michael Turner comparisons today. I wouldn’t go that far, but I liked what I saw of the kid. He had a huge breakout year in 2010 for Louisville and is reportedly a tremendous character kid after turning his life around.

WR Greg Salas UP

Showing very good hands and instincts as a route runner. He lacks breakaway speed and he’s coming out of a weird system that bloated his stats, but I think he could be an early day 3 guy. The Davone Bess comparisons make sense.

WR Courtney Smith DOWN

If someone were to make a montage video of his week in Mobile, it would be a good minute plus of him dropping balls and getting yelled at by his coaches. Single worst week of any player here. If he gets drafted, it’s because he’s 6-4. Or because some team forgot to send a scout to Mobile.

WR Leonard Hankerson UP

Continuing to be impressed by this kid. I’ve got him as a 2nd rounder (up from an early-mid 3rd) and my #5 receiver.

WR Vincent Brown UP

More of the same from this small school kid. Andre Roberts made himself a 3rd rounder out of a small school last year with a strong Senior Bowl. That could be Brown this year. Now my #6 receiver.

WR Dwayne Harris UP

Since measuring in two inches shorter than listed, Harris has done nothing but impress. He’s a kick returner as well and should be a high day 3 pick. Could even sneak into the 3rd round with a strong game Saturday.

TE Lance Kendricks UP

Passing catching well, no surprise there, but he also is doing some surprisingly nice things as a blocker, which is big for his stock.

TE Lee Smith UP

Another impressive day all around for the physically dominating Lee Smith.

OT Gabe Carimi UP

Proving his standing as the best pure right tackle, a mauler with great technique. Hasn’t proved he can play left tackle yet though. If he could somehow do that, he might be the first or second tackle off the board.

OT James Carpenter UP

Didn’t think of him as anything more than a guard coming into this week, but he’s doing very well in individual drills and playing left tackle in 11 on 11 practices. He’s got enough technique against the run to hold his own at 300 pounds and he’s surprisingly very athletic. I think he could be a late day 2 early day 3 pick.

OT James Brewer DOWN

No doubt he’s physically dominant, but he has been really inconsistent in one on ones.

G Lee Ziemba DOWN

Simply put, terrible. His technique is terrible. He gets way too high on every play and is dominated from the start. Doesn’t replant well enough to make up for it. Everyone says he’s a smart kid, but I don’t see the technique. Might be just a guard and nothing more.

G Danny Watkins UP

He may be 27 years old (before draft day), but he is the most polished offensive lineman on either side. There’s no doubt he could start in the NFL from day 1. Phenomenal technique. He can play any scheme. I don’t think he falls out of the 3rd.

G Rodney Hudson UP

At his size, with his lack of athleticism, he needs to have perfect technique. That’s exactly what he did today. I think he could be interesting as a center. I hope he gets to line up there on Saturday. He might be a better fit at center than at guard, but even as a guard, I still say he’s a 3rd rounder.

C Kristofer O’Dowd DOWN

Overwhelmed once again. He’s not having a good week. He can’t hold his own one on one with big tackles which is bad if he’s going to be a center.

C Jake Kirkpatrick TCU

The most dominant center in one on ones this week. He might have surpassed O’Dowd as the #3 center in this class. We’ll see more Saturday.

DE Allen Bailey DOWN

Another bad day for him. He’s no longer a first round talent in my book (not even a borderline one). He’s going to blow everyone away at the combine, but he’s sucked this week. Too small, too much of a tweener, terrible in one on ones, hasn’t mattered if he was matched up with a guard or a tackle. He’s getting destroyed. Terrible technique.

DE Ryan Kerrigan UP

Had a good day as a stand up rusher which was key because he weighed in at 255.

DE Jeremy Beal DOWN

Beal did not impress at all as a stand up rusher, continuing his bad week. He might be just a 4-3 guy.

DE Brooks Reed UP

Also moved to a stand up position today and played well. Remember, I also thought he had a good day as an end in one on ones yesterday, so he’s having a pretty good week. He’s a feisty competitor.

NT Phil Taylor UP

Working towards beating out Jerrell Powe (junior/Mississippi) for the #1 nose tackle spot. Very surprised by his quickness and pass rushing moves at his size. Interested to see him play on Saturday.

OLB Von Miller UP

Raved about by the NFL Network guys and I agree with them. Obviously weighing in at under 240 pounds hurts, but he’s proven he can play outside linebacker in addition to rush linebacker and his quickness off the edge is unparalleled. He’s someone I really fell in love with as a prospect last season, playing through an injury, improving in coverage, and then going on a “DESTROY ALL QUARTERBACKS!!!!” tear in the 2nd half of the season once he was healthy. I have no problem with him as a top 15 pick. Hesistant to call him a top 10 pick.

OLB Sam Acho UP

Didn’t have the greatest day as a rush linebacker today, struggling some in coverage, but overall he was pretty solid. This is important because he was overpowered as a stand up end in one on ones Tuesday.

OLB Lawrence Wilson UP

Very good in coverage against tight ends, bigger tight ends today. Tough to stand out as a linebacker at the Senior Bowl, but he’s done it on two straight days for me.

MLB Colin McCarthy UP

30 inch arms hurt on Monday, but he’s played well this week. Not the most athletic guy, but scrappy and always around the ball.

MLB KJ Wright UP

Someone I didn’t know much about coming into this week, he’s big and athletic and can bull rush pretty well for a linebacker. Lined up with his hand down in one on ones and held his own against guys with 60 pounds on him.

MLB Casey Matthews UP

Beat Nate Solder in one on ones on several occasions today. This is relevant because no one’s gotten around Solder today. He also impressed in coverages in 11 on 11s. He did everything right today. He might be a late 2nd rounder in my book now. I’m looking forward to watching him Saturday.

CB Shareece Wright UP

Bad day yesterday, great day today. Inconsistent definitely, but athletic, flashes brilliance, good upside and coachable. Should be a high day 3 pick.

CB Marcus Gilchrist UP

This tweener was the South’s best coverage defensive back today. Excited to see him play Saturday. I’m particularly interested in where they line him up.

CB Kendric Burney UP

The major knock on him is size, but he had a good day in my opinion today. Very physical for his size within 5 yards and has the speed to keep up with faster guys. Bigger guys can definitely go over the top of him though. He’s also feisty against the run and a fun player to watch. Reminds me of a poor man’s version of Devin McCourty who we all saw last year at the Senior Bowl.
