Combine Monday 2012

DE Frank Alexander DOWN

I was impressed that Alexander bulked up to 270, which he needed to do because he’s not the most athletic, but it’s always a bad sign when someone bulks up that much and then chooses not to work out without a clear injury. We’ll have to wait until his Pro Day to get a clear story on him.

DT Michael Brockers DOWN

Brockers was supposed to be an athletic freak and some were speculating that he could still run in the 4.9s despite weighing in at 6-5 322. However, he ran a 5.33 with a mere 8 foot 9 broad jump and 26.5 inch vertical. Add in his 19 reps of 225 on the bench press and I think this week was negative on the whole for him.

DT Fletcher Cox UP

Despite being 6-4 298, Fletcher Cox ran a 4.79 with a blazing 1.63 10 yard split. Mike Mayock thinks he can comfortably carry 20 more pounds. With Brockers moving down and Devon Still not wowing, Cox has put himself in the running to be the first defensive tackle off the board. There is some speculation he could be a surprise top 10 pick ala Tyson Jackson.

DE Vinny Curry DOWN

Curry is known as a speed rusher, so a 4.89 40 time is weird. However, you can’t pop on the tape of him and not know he’s a speed rusher. He doesn’t time well, but football speed is more important. However, for someone on the first round borderline, this isn’t helpful. He seems like a 2nd rounder and at 6-3 266, he may actually be a better fit for a 4-3 now than a 3-4.

DT Jaye Howard UP

Jaye Howard never looked at fast on tape, but perhaps that was because he was playing out of position as a 3-4 nose tackle. The 6-3 301 pounder ran a 4.75 40 and could be an interesting mid round sleeper as a one gap penetrator for a 4-3 team.

DE Melvin Ingram UP

Ingram helped himself this week. He showed up 8 pounds lighter to appeal to 4-3 teams, but still put up 28 reps of 225 at 6-1 264. Today he blazed a 4.66 40 and had a 34.5 inch vertical. He also was very strong in the drills. The Seahawks reportedly have a lot of interest in him at 12, but he might not be there anymore. He could go as high as 7 to Jacksonville and could go 8th to Miami or 10th to Buffalo.

DT Mike Martin UP

Martin is another guy with a surprisingly fast 40 time, running a 4.84 with a 1.69 10 yard split, a 33.5 inch vertical, and a 9 foot 5 broad jump. That’s surprisingly athletic for him, but maybe he just never got to show off his athleticism as a nose tackle at Michigan. Martin has a great motor to compliment his natural abilities and should be a 2nd rounder, though he’ll probably go in the 3rd round.

DE Shea McClellin UP

McClellin bulked up to 260 to appeal to more 4-3 teams and he carried it well with a 4.62 40 and a 1.57 10 yard split. He also looked good in the drills. He’ll be more appealing to 3-4 teams, but could get some looks from 4-3 teams now. He looks like a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

DE Nick Perry UP

Perry raised some eyebrows when he showed up at 6-3 271 rather than 250, but with a 4.50 40, a 1.56 10 yard split, 35 reps on the bench press, a 10 foot 4 broad jump, and a 38.5 inch vertical, he showed he still has freakish athleticism. He’ll appeal to both 3-4 and 4-3 teams and should go in the top 20-25 picks.

DT Dontari Poe UP

346 pound men aren’t supposed to move like Dontari Poe. Poe had a 4.87 with a 1.68 10 yard split and also had a 29.5 inch vertical and a 9 foot 9 broad jump. Yesterday, he had a Combine leading 44 reps of 225 on the bench. He’s raw certainly, but someone will take a chance on him in the top 15 or 20 picks, either a 3-4 or a 4-3 team.

DT Kendall Reyes UP

Reyes showed his strength yesterday with 36 reps, but he showed his speed and athleticism today with a 4.79 40, a 34.5 inch vertical, and a 9 foot 5 broad jump. He looks like a 2nd rounder.

OLB Nigel Bradham UP

Florida State has produced some speedy linebackers over the years and Bradham looks like another with a 4.53 40, a 37 inch vertical, and a 10 foot 1 broad jump. He’s put himself in day 2 consideration now.

OLB Zach Brown UP

Zach Brown bulked up to 244 pounds for this week, but didn’t lose his speed. He ran a 4.45 and a 4.44 in his 2 runs and if you put the first 20 of the first run and the last 20 of the 2nd run together, you’d probably get a 4.3 time. He stumbled twice on his first run in the 2nd half and didn’t get off to as fast a start on his 2nd try. His 10 yard split was a blazing 1.52.

MLB Vontaze Burfict DOWN

I wouldn’t touch this kid in the first 4 rounds. He’s got attitude issues, can’t play well without playing violently and illegally, and now he’s out of shape. He ran a 4.93 40 with a 30 inch vertical and an 8 foot 8 broad jump. He’s supposedly got huge upside, but it’s not enough for me to take a chance on him. His stock was already slipping out of the 1st round heading into this week. Now he’s being ranked in the 3rd round range and that may even be too rich for him.

MLB Tank Carder UP

Carder showed better athleticism than he was expected to, running a 4.56 40, while posting a 34.5 inch vertical and a 10 foot 1 broad jump. He looks like a day 2 pick.

MLB Audie Cole DOWN

Cole really struggled in pass coverage drills and his 40 time wasn’t great either with a 4.72. He’s a big guy at 6-2 246, but he might be a 2 down linebacker at the next level. He looks like a 3rd rounder.

OLB Demario Davis UP

Davis had a solid week across the board, running a 4.53 at 6-2 235, with 32 reps on the bench, a 38.5 inch vertical, a 10 foot 4 broad jump. He’s a mid to late round developmental linebacker.

MLB Mychal Kendricks UP

Mychal Kendricks actually had the fastest linebacker times with a 4.41, one of the fastest linebacker times of the decade. Overlooked as the Pac-12 defensive player of the year, Kendricks had a great day with a 39.5 inch vertical a 10 foot 7 broad jump and also did well in the drills. He’s really helped himself and has moved in day 2 consideration.

MLB Luke Kuechly UP

So much for not being athletic. Kuechly had the 3rd fastest linebacker time with a 4.50 and also had a 38 inch vertical and a 10 foot 3 broad jump. Kuechly moved like a safety out there all day, including in drills, but at 6-3 242 with as many tackles as he has in his career, you know he can play the run and bring the hit too. 27 reps on the bench is also nice. He’s a very clean prospect that is in my top 10, but because of his position, he’ll probably go top 15 or top 20.

CB Omar Bolden UP

Bolden missed the whole season with injury, but it looks like he was lifting weights with his time off. The 5-10 202 pounder had 25 reps on the bench. Bolden was a potential first rounder before his injury and a surprise early declare. If he has a good day tomorrow, he could put himself back into day 2 consideration.

CB Antonio Fenelus UP

Fenelus isn’t very tall (5-8), but he’s thick at 190 pounds and his strength showed when he put up 20 reps of 225. He has some good tape too, size is what will keep him in the late rounds, but in the right role, he could be a steal.

CB Jayron Hosley DOWN

At just 178 pounds, there were going to be some questions about his strength. 11 reps of 225 won’t help anything.

S George Iloka UP

Iloka is truly a physical specimen. At 6-4 225, Iloka played both safety and cornerback at Boise State, though the tape didn’t always live up to his athletic ability. He’s got 34 ½ inch arms (big for an offensive lineman, huge for a defensive lineman) and still managed to put up 20 reps of 225. If he runs well, he could go on the 2nd day of the draft.

S Janzen Jackson DOWN

Jackson was once a potential day 2 pick, but off the field problems forced him out of Tennessee and to McNesse State. Jackson is small for a safety at 5-11 188, but probably won’t be able to play cornerback either. He’s not very strong. 8 reps of 225 is bad.

CB Chase Minnifield DOWN

Minnifield was the worst offensive or defensive player in terms of bench press reps, benching just 7. He also measured in 2 inches shorter at 5-10. His stock is slipping and he could go in the 3rd or 4th round now.
