Staying true to his word that there would be an open competition for starting quarterback, Pete Carroll is giving Matt Flynn, Tarvaris Jackson, and Russell Wilson equal reps in OTAs. Jackson is the incumbent and a mediocre starter for a 7-9 team with a 23rd ranked offense last year. Matt Flynn was a big money offseason acquisition as Aaron Rodgers’ former backup. He’s played very well in 2 career starts. Russell Wilson was their 3rd round pick and someone they’ve talked up endlessly this offseason. All signs right now are pointing to Flynn winning the starting job, Wilson being his backup, and Jackson, owed 4 million, will be cut as part of final cuts. Nothing is set in stone, however, and Carroll loves competition.

Media speculation that Jackson will be cut, while it may turn out to be true, is premature and borderline irresponsible. If that outcome had been predetermined it wouldn’t really be a competition, would it? I prefer to take the coach at his word and assume that it’s a genuine competition, and that the outcome will be determined during the course of the offseason. In my opinion to do otherwise is to engage in idle speculation at this early date.

Wow, someone is a little sensitive and got his panties all bunched up. The response to your article was hardly worth the retort Steven. Today’s media have no journalistic integrity, which make them pundits. Speculation belongs in the tabloids and journalists report facts that allow the reader to come up with their own conclusions.
