2011 NBA Mock Draft

Lottery 15-30 2nd Round

Updated 6/23/11

1. Cleveland Cavaliers- PG Kyrie Irving (Duke)

First reports say the Cavaliers haven’t made up their mind. Then reports say they’ve made up their mind and are going with Irving. Then another report comes out that they haven’t made a decision yet. In the end, even if they do give Derrick Williams strong consideration, I think they go with Kyrie Irving. The NBA is a copycat league and franchise point guards being drafted early is the big rage in recent years.

NBA Comparison: Chris Paul

2. Minnesota Timberwolves- SF Derrick Williams (Arizona)

I had Enes Kanter here in recent weeks, because he filled the biggest need for the Timberwolves and because the Timberwolves are known for doing head scratching things. Obviously they agree with me that Derrick Williams isn’t a great fit for them because with Kevin Love, Derrick Williams, Michael Beasley, and Ricky Rubio, they’d score a lot of points, but they wouldn’t play a lot of defense. They are desperately trying to move this pick and if they do manage to do that, this pick would almost definitely be Derrick Williams. If they are unable to move this pick, I think they settle on Williams and try to move Michael Beasley. He doesn’t fit, but he’s too talented for them to pass on.

NBA Comparison: Antawn Jamison

3. Utah Jazz- C Enes Kanter (Turkey)

The Jazz seem locked in on Enes Kanter, going with his talent, even though he’s joining a very crowded front court.

NBA Comparison: Vlade Divac

4. Cleveland Cavaliers- C Jonas Valanciunas (Lithuania)

The Cavaliers have made it known that they’d like Enes Kanter here at #4, but he’s not available so they’ll have to go with Jonas Valanciunas, another big man they really like. Valanciunas won’t come over to America next year, but it’s not like the Cavaliers are going anywhere either, so they take him and playing the waiting game.

NBA Comparison: Andris Biedrins

5. Toronto Raptors- PG Brandon Knight (Kentucky)

Jose Calderon is a decent point guard, but they’re going with the home run here with the high upside Brandon Knight over Kemba Walker, who is suddenly slipping.

NBA Comparison: Jrue Holiday

6. Washington Wizards- PF Jan Vesely (Czech Republic)

With John Wall and Nick Young, they have a really good back court. However, they need to build upfront and help a defense that ranked 7th worst in the league at 104.7 points per game allowed. Vesely gives them an upgrade at forward.

NBA Comparison: Andrei Kirilenko

7. Charlotte Bobcats- PF Tristan Thompson (Texas)

The Bobcats traded up to 7 for the sole intent of taking Tristan Thompson above Detroit. They were considering moving up as high as 4th for Thompson and will almost definitely take him here at 7.

NBA Comparison: Taj Gibson

8. Detroit Pistons- PF Bismack Biyombo (Congo)

With Thompson gone, the Pistons have to go with Plan B, Bismack Biyombo. They need size inside next to Greg Monroe and Biyombo can be that for them.

NBA Comparison: Serge Ibaka

9. Charlotte Bobcats- SG Alec Burks (Colorado)

The Bobcats reportedly are in love with Burks and won’t let the top shooting guard in this class fall past them and I agree with them. Burks should be rated among the top 5 in this class. He’s a natural scorer who isn’t one dimensional and I doubt he busts because he is so polished. The Bobcats like to take proven college players early in the draft and Burks could give them an immediate upgrade as a starting shooting guard over Gerald Henderson.

NBA Comparison: Andre Iguodala

10. Sacramento Kings- PG Jimmer Fredette (BYU)

The Kings moved down from 7 to 10 with the intent of drafting Jimmer Fredette to play alongside Tyreke Evans.

NBA Comparison: Ben Gordon

11. Golden State Warriors- SG Klay Thompson (Washington State)

Reports say the Warriors are enamored with Klay Thompson and that he won’t fall past them at 11. That makes sense because this team is “secretly” frantically trying to move Monta Ellis. Thompson gives them a more traditional 2 guard alongside Stephen Curry and he also fits their run and gun style of play.

NBA Comparison: Marco Belinelli

12. Utah Jazz- PG Kemba Walker (Connecticut)

They miss out on Jimmer, but they still get a very good point guard here with the Kings preferring Jimmer to Kemba at 10. I think Walker leaps Devin Harris on the depth chart very quickly.

NBA Comparison: Jameer Nelson

13. Phoenix Suns- SF Kawhi Leonard (San Diego State)

The Suns need to add some youth on the wings where they are starting Vince Carter and Grant Hill. Leonard is that and he’s a very good value at this point.

NBA Comparison: Trevor Ariza

14. Houston Rockets- SF Chris Singleton (Florida State)

The Rockets shipped Shane Battier off at the deadline for Hasheem Thabeet and some cap space and Battier went on to do in Memphis what he’s done almost everywhere else, make the playoffs. Singleton gives them the perimeter defender they lost when they shipped off Battier. I think he’s the best perimeter defender in this class and would definitely fill a role for the role player loving Rockets.

NBA Comparison: Ron Artest

2011 Falcons Needs

Free Agency Priorities

Defensive End

Going into the draft, their two big needs were wide receiver and defensive end. They got their receiver in Julio Jones and now will look to free agency to add an end. They are a prime destination for free agents so they’ll be high on the list’s of Ray Edwards and Charles Johnson. Of course if new CBA rules restrict those two, they’d be kind of screwed.

Guard

Both of their starting guards are free agents. They either need to resign both or add some free agents because I don’t think there’s another starter on their roster.

Offensive Tackle

Right tackle Tyson Clabo is also a free agent so like with their two guards, they’ll either need to resign him or sign a free agent.

Outside Linebacker

Stephen Nicholas is a free agent and I don’t like 3rd round pick Akeem Dent’s chances to replace him if Nicholas leaves.

Draft Needs

Wide Receiver

Roddy White is an excellent receiver, but they need to get Matt Ryan some more options. He didn’t complete a pass longer than 46 yards all year and their lack of big play ability is what separates them from a team like Green Bay or Philadelphia. Titus Young will be considered in round 1, while Torrey Smith and Leonard Hankerson are options in round 2.

Drafted Julio Jones (#6)

Defensive End

John Abraham had 13 sacks, but turns 33 in May. Aside from him, they only managed 18 sacks. Kroy Biermann does a lot of things well on 1st and 2nd down, but he’s not an elite pass rusher. They need to find a 3rd down compliment for Biermann who can also develop into a successor for Abraham. With so few glaring needs, they can address this in the first 3 rounds.

Drafted Cliff Matthews (#230)

Safety

William Moore never panned out as a 2009 2nd round pick. They need a new strong safety. He was burnt a lot this year.

Offensive Tackle

Tyson Clabo is a free agent. If they can’t resign him, they need a new right tackle. They may opt to move Sam Baker to right and get a new left tackle. Even if Clabo returns, their depth at the position sucks.

Outside Linebacker

Stephen Nicholas is a marginal free agent. If an upgrades fall into their laps, they’ll probably take him.

Tight End

Tony Gonzalez is 35 in February and is in the last year of his deal, which means he definitely could retire after his contract is up. His production really was un-Tony Gonzalez like down the stretch, only surpassing 4 catches twice from week 10 on and only catching one pass in the playoff loss to Green Bay.

Guard

Both their starting guards are free agents. If they lose one, they may look at a pro-ready guy like Danny Watkins in the 2nd, to keep their line intact.

Drafted Andrew Jackson (#210)

Running Back

Michael Turner is a great running back. However, he turns 29 in February and they need a better compliment to him. Jason Snelling is a solid backup, but not a good compliment. They don’t have a single running back that can stretch the field just like they don’t have a wide receiver that can stretch the field.

Drafted Jacquizz Rodgers (#145)

Offseason moves:

Draft

2011 7th Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

204. Green Bay Packers- TE Colin Franklin (Iowa State)

When Jermichael Finley went down, they really didn’t have another pass catching tight end option. It’s not their biggest need, but they don’t have a lot of needs so I could see them adding a tight end late for depth purposes.

205. Detroit Lions- WR Aldrick Robinson (SMU)

It’s amazing after all those wide receivers they drafted in the Millen regime, they still need depth at the position. They need a 3rd receiver after Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson.

206. Buffalo Bills- QB Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech)

I think Chan Gailey sees Fitzpatrick as his guy, but that doesn’t mean he won’t take a developmental quarterback in the late rounds. Taylor has the mobility Gailey likes in a quarterback and I think he could play another position if he had to.

207. Cincinnati Bengals- OLB Doug Hogue (Syracuse)

Dhani Jones is probably done in Cincinnati. They drafted Roddrick Muckelroy last year in the 4th, but he’s no guarantee. Hogue gives them more depth.

208. New York Jets- CB Josh Thomas (Buffalo)

Antonio Cromartie might not return, which would move Kyle Wilson into the starting lineup. Thomas would provide depth either way as you can never have too much cornerback depth when you have to face the Patriots twice a year.

209. Seattle Seahawks- RB Darren Evans (Virginia Tech)

Pete Carroll likes having a lot of running backs so he could use a late rounder on another one to go with Marshawn Lynch, Leon Washington, and Justin Forsett.

210. Atlanta Falcons- DT David Carter (UCLA)

The Falcons probably aren’t ready to admit their mistake on Peria Jerry yet, but it won’t hurt them to bring in another defensive tackle late, especially since they love rotation at the position.

211. San Francisco 49ers- WR Ronald Johnson (USC)

With so many picks and so few capable wide receivers, it wouldn’t surprise me if they spent two picks on receivers.

212. Tennessee Titans- G Julian Vandervelde (Iowa)

Left guard and center were major holes for them last season. With other needs, I expect them to try to fill those needs in the mid to late rounds as they have other needs and you can find good interior linemen late.

213. Washington Redskins- CB Kevin Rutland (Missouri)

Corner is also a need for them. They could use an upgrade opposite DeAngelo Hall.

214. Houston Texans- CB Korey Lindsey (Southern Illinois)

Two corners in this draft is a possibility as they try to fix their 31st ranked pass defense.

215. Minnesota Vikings- OLB JT Thomas (West Virginia)

Ben Leber is a free agent and could be upgraded anyway.

216. St. Louis Rams- RB Bilal Powell (Louisville)

They need someone to help take the load off of Steven Jackson. Powell can do that and would be a potential long term replacement.

217. Miami Dolphins- TE Zach Pianalto (North Carolina)

Anthony Fasano could be upgraded. His BFF Bill Parcells, who brought him over from Dallas, is gone.

218. Miami Dolphins- WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Ohio State)

They could add another receiver for depth purposes in the wake of Brandon Marshall being stabbed by his crazy wife.

219. Oakland Raiders- CB Josh Gatlin (North Dakota State)

Given their cornerback problems, they could certainly double dip at the position. Gatlin runs a 4.36 at 6-1 196 so Al Davis will definitely be interested.

220. Dallas Cowboys- C Colin Baxter (Arizona)

Andre Gurode is getting up there in age, as he turned 32 this offseason. Baxter offers depth at all 3 interior positions.

221. New York Giants- WR Darvin Adams (Auburn)

Steve Smith might not be ready for the start of the season so Darvin Adams provides much needed depth.

222. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- P Chas Henry (Florida)

The Buccaneers ranked 2nd to last with 40.2 yards per punt.

223. Kansas City Chiefs- MLB Akeem Dent (Georgia)

More middle linebacker depth for their 3-4 defense.

224. Washington Redskins- P Ryan Donahue (Iowa)

Yeah, they need this too. They ranked 30th in punting. They can’t do anything right.

225. Baltimore Ravens- RB Da’Rel Scott (Maryland)

Why not add a 3rd back into the mix? Willis McGahee might not be around much longer anyway.

226. New Orleans Saints- OT Darius Morris (Temple)

Jon Stinchcomb is the weak link on that offensive front.

227. Philadelphia Eagles- RB Alex Green (Hawaii)

Green would give them a backup running back, which they need behind Dion Lewis. Green is the type of back they like.

228. St. Louis Rams- DE Pierre Allen (Nebraska)

Steve Spagnuolo drafted 3 ends late last year. He could take another this year as he tries to find a future replacement for James Hall.

229. Atlanta Falcons- OT Richard Lapham (Boston College)

Tyson Clabo is also a free agent on their offensive line.

230. Atlanta Falcons- P Derek Epperson (Baylor)

They ranked 29th in terms of punting last year.

231. San Francisco 49ers- S Chris Prosinski (Wyoming)

Dashon Goldston is a free agent and Prosinski would provide depth and a great special teamer.

232. Pittsburgh Steelers- 3-4 DE Zane Parr (Virginia)

The Steelers need some youth on their defensive line. Parr is raw, but they have time to wait on him and the coaching staff to bring the most out of him.

233. Green Bay Packers- S Duke Ihenacho (San Jose State)

More safety depth. This team doesn’t really need anything more.

234. San Diego Chargers- CB James Dockery (Oregon State)

The Chargers like taller cornerbacks like the 6-1 Dockery, who they have shown interest in. He would provide needed depth at the cornerback.

235. Miami Dolphins- S Mark LeGree (Appalachian State)

Safety is still a need. Chris Clemons was terrible last year.

236. Minnesota Vikings- S Jermale Hines (Ohio State)

Safety is yet another need for the Vikings. It doesn’t look like they’ll find a starter in this draft at the position, but who knows. Maybe Hines will become something.

237. Philadelphia Eagles- OLB Brian Rolle (Ohio State)

The Eagles have plenty of questions at linebacker. Ernie Sims is a free agent. Jamar Chaney is still developing. Stewart Bradley is injury prone. Moise Fokuo sucks. Rolle can be a solid special teamer at the worst. He’s the time of high effort kid who won’t let you cut him. That’s what you want out of a 7th rounder.

238. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OT Jarriel King (South Carolina)

Right tackle’s been a bit of a revolving door for them in the past two seasons. I don’t think King would stabilize it, but you never know. He also can provide necessary depth at guard.

239. San Francisco 49ers- FB Anthony Sherman (Connecticut)

Sherman gives them an upgrade at fullback.

240. Philadelphia Eagles- TE Ryan Taylor (North Carolina)

Brent Celek had a down year last year. Taylor is undersized, but athletic and a great pass catcher. Andy Reid will find a spot for him.

241. Oakland Raiders- WR Ricardo Lockette (Fort Valley State)

It wouldn’t be an NFL draft if the Raiders didn’t draft an athletic wide receiver. With a 4.34 40 at 6-2 211, Lockette fits the bill.

242. Seattle Seahawks- WR Jeff Maehl (Oregon)

Matt Hasselbeck’s receivers really let him down against Chicago so it wouldn’t surprise me if they added a receiver through the draft.

243. New Orleans Saints- TE Mike McNeill (Nebraska)

The Saints like multiple options at tight end so with Jeremy Shockey gone and David Thomas a free agent, they will probably add another tight end to go with Jimmy Graham somewhere in the draft.

244. Carolina Panthers- DT Chris Neild (West Virginia)

The Panthers need to add two defensive tackles through the draft. That’s how desperate the position is for them.

245. Buffalo Bills- G Matt Murphy (UNLV)

More offensive line help for the Bills. Murphy is someone they’ve shown interest in.

246. Cincinnati Bengals- DT Ladi Ajiboye (South Carolina)

Ajiboye gives them needed depth at defensive tackle. The Bengals will probably look past his character problems.

247. Denver Broncos- OT Willie Smith (East Carolina)

Right tackle is a need on their line. This may have to wait until 2012, but, again, you never know. Some of these 7th rounders could surprise.

248. Cleveland Browns- QB TJ Yates (North Carolina)

They seem determined to move forward with Colt McCoy as the starter. They’ll probably want a developmental prospect behind him just in case. Yates is a good fit for their West Coast offense.

249. Arizona Cardinals- RLB Thomas Keiser (Stanford)

The Cardinals will probably add two rush linebackers through the draft. There’s no guarantees O’Brien Schofield pans out and he’s their only legitimate under 30 option at the position.

250. San Francisco 49ers- TE Andre Smith (Virginia Tech)

The 49ers have a ton of picks and they’ve shown interest in tight ends. They could take one for depth purposes late.

251. Tennessee Titans- MLB Greg Lloyd (Connecticut)

Stephen Tulloch is a free agent and Lloyd would provide necessarily depth at all 3 linebacker positions.

252. Dallas Cowboys- S Mike O’Connell (Iowa State)

Mike O’Connell gives them more depth at safety, which is needed considering how bad they were against the pass last year. He also gives them a strong motor special teamer.

253. Washington Redskins- K Josh Jasper (LSU)

Yes, they need this too.

254. Houston Texans- MLB Mike Mohamed (California)

Moving to the 3-4, it would be helpfully to add 3-4 middle linebacker depth. Mr. Mock Irrelvant, Mike Mohamed played in a 3-4 in college.

2011 6th Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

166. Carolina Panthers- CB Chykie Brown (Texas)

Cornerback depth is needed and the athletic Brown could definitely develop into a great starter for this team in time.

167. Cincinnati Bengals- DE Pernell McPhee (Mississippi)

They’ll need a backup plan in case Antawn Odom gets hurt again in 2011.

168. Cleveland Browns- OT Derek Hall (Stanford)

They’re looking for upgrades at right tackle. Hall did a good job there for Stanford last year, helping keep Andrew Luck clean.

169. Buffalo Bills- CB Cortez Allen (Citadel)

Cornerback depth is needed. Terrence McGee is over 30 and has trouble staying healthy.

170. Cleveland Browns- S Da’Norris Searcy (North Carolina)

TJ Lang looks like a keeper at safety for the long term. They’ll need something opposite him though.

171. Arizona Cardinals- MLB Mark Herzlich (Boston College)

Paris Lenon doesn’t have much left in the tank. The Cardinals have proven they are willing to take a chance on “injured players.” They took O’Brien Schofield last year even though he had a long recovery ahead of him. Herzlich’s situation isn’t quite the same, but it’s obvious that he’s still not the same player he was before bone cancer in his leg when he was a projected first round pick.

172. Minnesota Vikings- DT Sealver Siliga (Utah)

Pat Williams is the oldest defense player in the league and it’s starting to show. He could retire this offseason and even if he doesn’t, he doesn’t have much left in the tank and they don’t have a suitable replacement for him.

173. Seattle Seahawks- FB Henry Hynoski (Pittsburgh)

An upgrade at fullback could really help their running game.

174. San Francisco 49ers- RB Dion Lewis (Pittsburgh)

With so many picks, it’s very likely they take a running back. Brian Westbrook is probably done and they’ll need someone to backup Frank Gore. Lewis fits in well with Gore and 2010 5th round Anthony Dixon.

175. Tennessee Titans- S Robert Sands (West Virginia)

Chris Hope isn’t terrible, but he’s overpaid and he could be upgraded.

176. Dallas Cowboys- RLB Steven Friday (Virginia Tech)

DeMarcus Ware is very good, but he’s been without a competent #2 pass rusher opposite him, to take the pressure off of him, since Greg Ellis was in his prime. Steven Friday is a 3-4 player only, but he was a very productive pass rusher at Virginia Tech.

177. Washington Redskins- G Zach Hurd (Connecticut)

The defensive line isn’t the only thing they need to fix. They had one of the league’s most porous lines last year allowing 46 sacks, 5th most in the league.

178. Houston Texans- 3-4 DE Mike Blanc (Auburn)

The Texans have expressed interest in adding competition upfront for guys like Antonio Smith and Amobi Okoye. Blank provides that.

179. Miami Dolphins- RLB Cheta Ozougwu (Rice)

Ozougwu was a 4-3 linebacker in college, but a lot of people are projecting to be a possible 3-4 rush linebacker in the pros. If he pans out there, they could move Koa Misi inside, something they have expressed interest in doing, or they could just move Ozougwu inside, where they need depth.

180. Baltimore Ravens- C Brandon Fusco (Slippery Rock)

Matt Birk is 35 this offseason. Fusco can play multiple positions inside, including both guard positions. The Ravens need to upgrade their line and could use depth at all 3 interior line position.

181. Oakland Raiders- RB Mario Fannin (Auburn)

Michael Bush will likely leave to take a starting job somewhere so they’ll need a new backup running back. Mario Fannin runs a 4.37 at 5-10 235 so Al Davis naturally won’t care that he was Auburn’s 3rd string back in 2010.

182. Jacksonville Jaguars- QB Scott Tolzien (Wisconsin)

David Garrard is not going to get any better than the average quarterback he is now and general consensus is that the Jaguars are looking for future replacements for the 33 year old.

183. San Diego Chargers- RB Derrick Locke (Kentucky)

Darren Sproles is going to be too expensive to keep long term. Locke can do what Sproles does for cheaper.

184. Arizona Cardinals- TE Julius Thomas (Portland State)

The Cardinals have needed an upgrade at tight end for years. They just don’t draft pass catching tight ends early. They don’t value them. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they used a late pick on a high upside tight end, who could blossom into a productive pass catching tight end in their offense.

185. New York Giants- C Zane Taylor (Utah)

Center is another weak link on their line.

186. Denver Broncos- CB Brandon Hogan (West Virginia)

Champ Bailey is 33 this offseason and Perrish Cox is facing rape charges. Besides, they ranked 30th against the pass even with those two last year. A lot of that blame falls on the pass rush, but they could still grab a corner at some point in the draft. Hogan falls because he’s hurt, but the Broncos aren’t going anywhere for a while unless Tim Tebow performs a miracle and Hogan could become Champ Bailey’s replacement.

187. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- MLB Mario Harvey (Marshall)

Barrett Ruud looks like he won’t be resigned by the team long term. They’ll need a new man in the middle.

188. Indianapolis Colts- MLB Josh Bynes (Auburn)

Josh Bynes is a typical Colts pick, under the radar, but good motor, productive, and a locker room guy. Bynes gives them depth at linebacker, where they were ravaged by injuries last year, and also provides them with a strong special teamer. The Colts love using late round picks on linebackers.

189. Denver Broncos- S Eric Hagg (Nebraska)

Brian Dawkins is looking pretty done. Renaldo Hill opposite him has never been a great player. This position might not be addressed until next year, unfortunately, but in the mean time, maybe Hagg becomes something special for them. You never know.

190. San Francisco 49ers- CB Justin Rogers (Richmond)

Cornerback is such a big need and they have so many picks that if they can’t address the position until the 4th, they’ll probably use another late pick on a cornerback just to be safe.

191. Baltimore Ravens- S Chris Culliver (South Carolina)

Culliver could provide depth at cornerback if needed, but his best position as a pro is going to be safety. They can’t count on Ed Reed for 16 games anymore.

192. Atlanta Falcons- G Steve Schilling (Michigan)

Both of their starting guards are free agents so they’ll look at depth at the position.

193. New England Patriots- QB Nathan Enderle (Wyoming)

I don’t buy the Patriots using an early pick on a quarterback. This is a bad year to need a quarterback. Why would you want to make that a need when you don’t have to? It wouldn’t surprise me if they added one late. I don’t think Brian Hoyer is the long term solution. They found Brady in the 6th and they found Cassel in the trash, so they might think they can find Brady’s long term replacement in the 6th or 7th. Enderle can make all the throws, but they often wind up being caught by the wrong team. However, he’s got time, he’s got potential, he can learn, and he’ll be going to into a great environment to reach his potential.

194. New York Jets- NT Anthony Gray (Southern Mississippi)

Sione Pouha is a good player, but he’s not the big bodied run stuffer Kris Jenkins was. He’s also no spring chicken either at 32. Gray gives them youth and a Jenkins esque big guy.

195. Chicago Bears- G David Arkin (Missouri State)

More offensive line help. They have to make sure Jay Cutler doesn’t die next year.

196. Pittsburgh Steelers- K Alex Henery (Nebraska)

The Steelers had inconsistent play at the kicker position all year last year.

197. Green Bay Packers- RB Roy Helu (Nebraska)

It wouldn’t surprise me if they took another late round running back, given the health concerns that surround James Starks and Ryan Grant.

198. New York Giants- G Andrew Jackson (Fresno State)

More offensive line help for the Giants. Rich Seubert will be in a contract year and he’s also old and injury prone.

199. Kansas City Chiefs- QB Greg McElroy (Alabama)

Matt Cassel sucked down the stretch last year when he had to play good teams. The last time he didn’t play a schedule consisting of the little sisters of the poor, the Chiefs went 4-12. He’s owed a lot of money in the future so the Chiefs might want to look at a potential successor, just in case. Besides, the Chiefs have made it clear they are looking at different options other than Brodie “0-10” Croyle at backup quarterback, as they should.

200. Minnesota Vikings- C Alex Linnenkohl (Oregon State)

John Sullivan sucks. Center and right guard are huge needs on this offensive line. Here they take a center.

201. San Diego Chargers- S Jerrard Tarrant (Georgia Tech)

Assuming they resign the talented Eric Weddle, they’ll only need one upgrade at safety. I don’t think they can rely on Bob Sanders.

202. New York Giants- S Nate Williams (Washington)

The Giants added a ton of safeties last year and still got burnt deep often. Nate Williams gives them more depth at the position, as well as a great character guy and special teamer.

203. Carolina Panthers- DE Casey Matthews (South Carolina)

Even if Charles Johnson stays, they could add another young end through the draft. They have Everette Brown and Greg Hardy, but there’s no telling if either will ever pan out.

Go on to 7th Round

2011 5th Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

132. Carolina Panthers- Austin Pettis (Boise State)

Steve Smith wants out. David Gettis and Brandon LaFell both flashed as rookies, but they were also very inconsistent. They’ll need to add another receiver into the mix.

133. Buffalo Bills- OT DeMarcus Love (Arkansas)

Continuing to build around Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Bills add a talented development prospect at tackle. They haven’t drafted a tackle early in years and it shows. Hopefully for them, Love pans out, unlike most of their late round tackles.

134. Cincinnati Bengals- S Jeron Johnson (Boise State)

Safety depth is needed and Jeron Johnson fits their scheme like a glove.

135. Kansas City Chiefs- NT Ian Williams (Notre Dame)

In 2 years since they switched to the 3-4, they haven’t really had a true 3-4 nose tackle like Ian Williams

136. Arizona Cardinals- FB Owen Marecic (Stanford)

The Cardinals need an upgrade at fullback to help out their running game and Marecic is the best this class has to offer. He’s a terrific special teamer as well.

137. Cleveland Browns- CB Jalil Brown (Colorado)

If they don’t take Patrick Peterson in the first, they’ll have to address the cornerback position at some point. They need something for the future opposite Joe Haden.

138. Houston Texans- S Joe Lefeged (Rutgers)

Bernard Pollard really struggled in coverage last year and when you’re 31st against the pass and have to face Peyton Manning twice a year, adding two safeties in the draft isn’t a bad idea.

139. Minnesota Vikings- TE Rob Housler (Florida Atlantic)

The Vikings are known to be looking for tight ends for their 2 tight end set in 2011.

135. Kansas City Chiefs- C Tim Barnes (Missouri)

Casey Wiegmann is one of the league’s older players, turning 38 in July. They need a center of the future.

141. San Francisco 49ers- WR Greg Salas (Hawaii)

Salas would be an upgrade in the slot over Ted Ginn, who shouldn’t do anything other than special teams.

142. Tennessee Titans- DE Greg Romeus (Pittsbugh)

The Titans go for the homerun here at defensive end and they really don’t have any other choice at this point. Romeus is a first round talent if he’s healthy. He’s worth the risk in the 5th. Jason Babin probably won’t be back so they need another end opposite Derrick Morgan.

143. Dallas Cowboys- 3-4 DE Brandon Bair (Oregon)

Marcus Spears never panned out at 3-4 defensive end. He’s likely gone as a free agent. Bair can be his replacement.

144. Washington Redskins- OT Derek Newton (Arkansas State)

Mike Shanahan loves building his offensive line and Newton is an excellent fit for his zone blocking scheme. Right tackle Jammal Brown is a free agent.

145. Dallas Cowboys- WR Stephen Burton (West Texas A&M)

The Cowboys aren’t going to want to pay Roy Williams to be their 3rd receiver. The high upside Stephen Burton can be that guy and his upside is going to intrigue Jerry Jones.

146. Miami Dolphins- CB Chimdi Chewka (Ohio State)

They need depth at the cornerback position. If Chewka pans out, they could move Sean Smith to free safety, another need position.

147. Jacksonville Jaguars- WR Niles Paul (Nebraska)

They have nothing after Mike Thomas at wide receiver with Mike Sims Walker all but gone as a free agent.

148. Oakland Raiders- TE Virgil Green (Nevada)

The Raiders want to run more two tight end sets and Zach Miller is a free agent. Virgil Green has the athleticism and measurables that Al Davis likes.

149. Philadelphia Eagles- G Lee Ziemba (Auburn)

More help for the right side of their offensive line. If Pinkston plays inside, Ziemba can move outside to right tackle.

150. Minnesota Vikings- WR Dwayne Harris (East Carolina)

Sidney Rice could be a free agent depending on the new CBA rules and given that the Vikings don’t have a quarterback, you couldn’t blame him for skipping town. Add wide receiver to that long list of needs. That at least need depth behind Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian should Rice leave.

151. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- RB Noel Devine (West Virginia)

Cadillac Williams is probably gone as a free agent so they’ll need a new 3rd down back. Noel Devine will give them a speedster compliment to the bruising LeGarrette Blount.

152. Indianapolis Colts- DT Martin Parker (Richmond)

The Colts never draft defensive tackles early, even though they’ve needed help at the position for years. Bill Polian simply doesn’t value the position that much. However, they will look for defensive tackles in the late rounds and Parker is a great fit for their scheme.

153. Philadelphia Eagles- DT Cedric Thornton (Southern Arkansas)

The Eagles need depth at defensive tackle and with an abundance of late round picks, they can afford to take Thornton here, where he is one of the best available.

154. Detroit Lions- RB Stevan Ridley (LSU)

They’ve used Maurice Morris extensively down the stretch in each of the past two years. That can’t happen again. They need more depth at the running back position.

155. Washington Redskins- RB Delone Carter (Syracuse)

Mike Shanahan loves grabbing running backs in the late rounds. Carter is the best running back available and could be a good fit for their scheme.

156. Seattle Seahawks- S Shiloh Keo (Idaho)

Somewhere Lawyer Milloy is still getting burned by Greg Olsen. The 37 year old is done.

157. Seattle Seahawks- CB Shareece Wright (USC)

Kelly Jennings has struggled in the past few years and now is a free agent. Pete Carroll grabs one of his old USC guys.

158. Atlanta Falcons- WR Jeremy Kerley (TCU)

Another wide receiver upgrade for the Falcons. Kerley looks like a natural slot guy and can help on special teams as well.

159. New England Patriots- FB Charles Clay (Tulsa)

If any team can find a way to utilize this enigmatic prospect, it’s the Patriots.

160. Chicago Bears- WR Terrance Toliver (LSU)

Lovie Smith has expressed interest in adding a big wide receiver to compliment their smaller receivers, guys like Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. The 6-4 Toliver fits the bill.

161. New York Jets- S Chris Conte (California)

Brodney Pool is a free agent and safety depth is needed regardless.

162. Pittsburgh Steelers- CB Curtis Marsh (Utah State)

They’re going to need to add more than one cornerback through the draft if they’re going to avoid getting destroyed by teams that can spread.

163. Green Bay Packers- WR Cecil Shorts (Mount Union)

I know what you’re thinking, didn’t the Packers just win a Super Bowl because of their strength at wide receiver? Yes, and that is exactly why they must keep it a strength. Donald Driver has hinted at retiring this offseason and he’s 36 and on his last legs anyway. Meanwhile, James Jones could be a free agent, depending on the new CBA rules.

164. Baltimore Ravens- RLB Bruce Miller (UCF)

Another potential pass rusher for them. Sergio Kindle suffered an accident after they drafted him in the 2nd round last year and his career is in serious doubt. Miller can be a do-over.

165. Baltimore Ravens- CB Buster Skrine (UT-Chattanooga)

They only have two cornerbacks under contract for next year. They’ll either sign Nnamdi Asomugha or resign Chris Carr, but the high upside Skrine can be the 4th corner.

2011 4th Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

98. Carolina Panthers- TE Jordan Cameron (USC)

Jeremy Shockey is not the long term answer at tight end for them. I’m not even sure he’s the short term answer. Jordan Cameron’s stock is on the rise and he could go in the 3rd round like Jimmy Graham, another former basketball player turned tight end, did last year. Graham went to New Orleans and backed up Jeremy Shockey for a year. Cameron could do the same this year.

99. Seattle Seahawks- OT Jah Reid (UCF)

More offensive line help for the Seahawks. Russell Okung is a stud young left tackle, but they need something opposite him. They were lost in pass protection when he was hurt last year.

100. Buffalo Bills- WR Tandon Doss (Indiana)

More help for Ryan Fitzpatrick. Lee Evans is at the point where his salary exceeds his production value so he could be cut. Steve Johnson is a solid #1 receiver, but they need something opposite him. James Hardy never panned out as a 2009 2nd round pick.

101. Cincinnati Bengals- RB DeMarco Murray (Oklahoma)

Cedric Benson is a free agent and after averaging 3.5 YPC and getting arrested in his contract year, he could easily not be brought back. Besides, Benson turns 29 mid season and is coming off of back to back 300+ carry seasons. Another back in the mix wouldn’t hurt even if they did bring him back, especially one with amazing pass catching ability like DeMarco Murray.

102. Cleveland Browns- OLB Quan Sturdivant (North Carolina)

There isn’t really anyone who stands out amongst Cleveland’s group of linebackers other than D’Qwell Jackson, who is a talented player, but injury prone. Sturdivant can play all 3 linebacker positions in Cleveland’s new 4-3 and he’s a good value at this point.

103. Arizona Cardinals- G John Moffitt (Wisconsin)

More offensive line help for a Cardinals offensive line that allowed 50 sacks last year.

104. Philadelphia Eagles- S Jaiquawn Jarrett (Temple)

Quintin Mikell is a free agent and it doesn’t look like he’ll be back. The Eagles have shown a lot of interest in Jarrett, a local kid and a rising prospect.

105. Houston Texans- S Deunta Williams (North Carolina)

The Texans are likely moving Glover Quin to free safety. In case that doesn’t work out, they add Williams here. Williams is a good prospect and would have been a 2nd round pick if it weren’t for some injury concerns. The Texans will take the risk here in the 4th, where he’s well worth it.

106. Minnesota Vikings- CB Kendric Burney (North Carolina)

Antoine Winfield is 34 this offseason. Cedric Griffin can’t stay healthy. Chris Cook disappointed as a rookie. They could definitely add another cornerback into the mix.

107. Detroit Lions- S DeAndre McDaniel (Clemson)

CC Brown started several games for them at safety. Yes, that CC Brown.

108. San Francisco 49ers- CB Richard Sherman (Stanford)

Nate Clements is overpaid, old, and injury prone. He will either be cut or take a pay cut and move to safety. Either way, they’ll need a new corner opposite Shawntae Spencer. Jim Harbaugh reaches right into San Francisco’s backyard and takes Sherman, who he coached at Stanford.

109. Tennessee Titans- WR Denarius Moore (Tennessee)

Teams that spend first rounders on quarterbacks often use their next pick on help for him. Moore gives them that. Kenny Britt has character problems. Nate Washington is best off in the slot, where he thrived in Pittsburgh. 2010 3rd round pick Damian Williams is still developing. Moore has the upside to become a starter for this team. He’s a risk, but the Titans like taking risks and Moore, who has amazing athleticism and dominated down the stretch last year for Tennessee, could be worth the risk.

110. Dallas Cowboys- RB Jordan Todman (Connecticut)

They have more pressing needs, but Marion Barber probably isn’t going to be back next year and Todman is way too good to pass on here. He could end up being the lead back that Felix Jones is having trouble becoming.

111. New England Patriots- RLB Ricky Elmore (Arizona)

This pick completes the trade where Miami moved up in the 2nd to take Colin Kaepernick. Elmore’s not the most athletic kid, but he’s productive, with 21 sacks in the last 2 years and he’s got a great motor. Elmore says it’s his life dream to play for the Patriots and that he worships Tedy Bruschi. The Patriots will love a player like him, needing help at rush linebacker where Tully Banta Cain led the way with a mere 5 sacks last year.

112. St. Louis Rams- TE DJ Williams (Arkansas)

The Rams need to bring in a true pass catching tight end for Sam Bradford. No, Michael Hoomanawanui doesn’t count, no matter how cool his last name is.

113. Oakland Raiders- C Kristofer O’Dowd (USC)

More help on the interior line for Raiders. They really need a new center.

114. Jacksonville Jaguars- OLB Ross Homan (Ohio State)

2 of their 3 starting linebackers from 2010 are free agents and even if both are resigned, Homan is a nice depth player with good versatility and a high motor kid who would thrive on special teams. He fits what the Jaguars look for in a player, strong motor, blue collar, productive in college.

115. San Francisco 49ers- NT Sione Fua (Stanford)

Jim Harbaugh grabs another Stanford kid. The 49ers might not be willing to give Aubrayo Franklin the contract he wants, so Fua is a backup plan and provides good depth at all 3 positions on their 3-4 line even if they do resign Franklin.

116. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OLB Lawrence Wilson (Connecticut)

They’ll look for either one or two outside linebacker upgrades this offseason depending on how they feel about Dekoda Watson, a talented 7th round rookie who fits their scheme like a glove.

117. New York Giants- OLB KJ Wright (Mississippi State)

They went inside linebacker in the first and now they go outside linebacker. Wright can hopefully become the player they thought Clint Sintim would be when they drafted him in the 2nd round in 2009.

118. Kansas City Chiefs- S Tyler Sash (Iowa)

Eric Berry will be a starter at safety for a longtime, but they need a safety opposite him. Sash is a very good value at this point.

119. Indianapolis Colts- WR Vincent Brown (San Diego State)

The Colts normally only carry 5 wide receivers and they have 5 under contract for 2011, but Austin Collie and/or Anthony Gonzalez could be cut in Training Camp for health reasons. Besides, it might be in their best interest to carry a 6th receiver next year in case one or both of them get hurt again. Plus, Reggie Wayne is a free agent in 2012 and the two sides are far apart on any sort of long term deal for the soon to be 32 year old.

120. Philadelphia Eagles- OT Jason Pinkston (Pittsburgh)

How do you allow 50 sacks when Michael Vick is your quarterback? Pinkston can play right tackle or right guard for them, both of which are need positions.

121. Jacksonville Jaguars- S Ahmad Black (Florida)

More secondary help for the Jaguars. They need two new safeties this offseason and Gene Smith will like Black’s hustle and character.

122. Buffalo Bills- MLB Kelvin Sheppard (LSU)

They’re thin at the 3-4 middle linebacker spot and Sheppard provides good depth and a good value at this point.

123. Baltimore Ravens- MLB Nate Irving (NC State)

Ray Lewis will start to decline eventually…right…right…right. Besides, it’s not like they have had a consistent contributor next to him since Bart Scott followed Rex Ryan to New York.

124. Atlanta Falcons- RB Jacquizz Rodgers (Oregon State)

Michael Turner is getting up there in age so Rodgers helps take some of the load off of him. They have Jason Snelling as a backup, but he’s too similar to Turner to be a true compliment. Rodgers’s speed compliments Turner and Snelling well and gives them a big playmaker that their offense desperately needs. He also is a better pass catcher and a 3rd down back.

125. New England Patriots- G Justin Boren (Ohio State)

They have to draft a guard at some point. Logan Mankins isn’t resigned long term and Stephen Neal has retired. I don’t know if they can count on Dan Connolly for too long and Boren has the potential to become a future starter at guard out of the mid rounds, not an uncommon thing.

126. New York Jets- RLB Ugo Chinasa (Oklahoma State)

The Jets take their replacement for Jason Taylor here, in the form of the extremely athletic Ugo Chinasa. Rex Ryan might think he can coach the best out of Chinasa.

127. Chicago Bears- RB Kendall Hunter (Oklahoma State)

The Bears were at their best last year when they were a run heavy team. Having a backup that can average more than 2.4 yards per carry (Chester Taylor) to team up with Matt Forte would make their running attack even more powerful.

128. Pittsburgh Steelers- MLB Colin McCarthy (Miami)

James Farrior just turned 36 so the forward thinking Steelers will be looking at potential replacements in the 2011 NFL Draft.

129. Green Bay Packers- 3-4 DE Lawrence Guy (Arizona State)

They need some depth at 3-4 end. Johnny Jolly recently got arrested while he was already suspended indefinitely. Cullen Jenkins is likely gone as a free agent.

130. Tennessee Titans- C Jake Kirkpatrick (TCU)

The reason Chris Johnson “struggled” last year, by his standards, was not so much that he was tired from his 2000 yard season in 2009, but rather their poor interior blocking. They’ll look at centers and guards in the mid rounds, where you often can might solid guard and centers.

131. Green Bay Packers- CB DeMarcus Van Dyke (Miami)

Van Dyke doesn’t fill an obvious need for them, but they did start running out of cornerbacks against the Steelers and Charles Woodson won’t be around forever. Van Dyke represents best available for a team that loves best available.

Go on to 5th Round

2011 3rd Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

65. Carolina Panthers- G Will Rackley (Lehigh)

The Panthers will probably be looking offense here to build around Cam Newton. Rackley gives them a big upgrade inside at guard, but he can also play right tackle in a pinch, which is going to be important for the Panthers because they were absolutely lost on the right side of their line when Jeff Otah went down last year.

66. Cincinnati Bengals- WR Greg Little (North Carolina)

Little has a laundry list of character problems, but he has enough talent for the Bengals to ignore those. He’s been called a 2nd round talent. Besides, wide receiver is a big need of theirs with Terrell Owens gone and Chad Ochocinco likely on his way out as well.

67. Miami Dolphins- G Clint Boling (Georgia)

They get this pick, moving up in the 3rd round, from trading out at 15. They could trade down again and pick up a 4th rounder, which they no longer have, but they need interior linemen badly and probably wouldn’t be able to get Clint Boling if they were to move down enough slots to pick up a 4th rounder.

68. Buffalo Bills- RLB Dontay Moch (Nevada)

Talking about Aaron Maybin at the Senior Bowl, Chan Gailey didn’t sound hopeful that the 2009 11th overall pick would turn it around. Remember Gailey wasn’t part of the regime that drafted Maybin, so he will have no loyalty to him. Continuing to build their defense, they take a high upside rush linebacker here.

69. Arizona Cardinals- OT Joseph Barksdale (LSU)

The Cardinals gave up 50 sacks last year. They need to protect whoever their quarterback is in 2011, especially if it’s Marc Bulger, who might start having Vietnam flashbacks if he takes too many more hits.

70. Cleveland Browns- DT Drake Nevis (LSU)

Moving to a 4-3, they have no adequate starter next to Ahtyba Rubin at defensive tackle. Luckily, this class is deep enough at defensive tackle where they can get a solid player at the position in the 3rd round.

71. Dallas Cowboys- CB Curtis Brown (Texas)

Jerry Jones says he doesn’t view cornerback as a big need, but he also says that he wants to cut cap to get under any potential salary cap in 2011. Cutting the old, overpaid, and injury prone Terence Newman would be a good way to do that. Curtis Brown could be his replacement. I don’t see them adding Prince Amukamara in the first, as Jones hasn’t shown any interest in him this offseason, but they could definitely go cornerback in rounds 2-4.

72. New Orleans Saints- OLB Greg Jones (Michigan State)

Linebacker has been a need for this team for a while. They need an upgrade over Scott Shanle this offseason and Jones is a good value at this point.

73. Houston Texans- NT Kendrick Ellis (Hampton)

Kendrick Ellis has first round talent, but his history of work ethic and character concerns could drop him, especially as a 345 pound nose tackle. You don’t want someone that big to balloon even bigger with a poor work ethic. However, he’s a rising prospect and could end up in the 2nd or 3rd round. The Texans take him here needing a true nose tackle for their 3-4 defense.

74. New England Patriots- RB Daniel Thomas (Kansas State)

The Patriots love being able to hand the ball off to multiple different running backs. The “old farts” Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, and Sammy Morris are all done as productive players in this league and Thomas gives them a 3rd option at running back with Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green Ellis. They have enough picks to use one on a luxury player who falls because of the devaluation of his position.

75. Detroit Lions- OLB Bruce Carter (North Carolina)

Carter could have gone in the first round if it wasn’t for an ACL tear. The Lions love BPA and would be thrilled if he fell to them. They don’t have a single starting caliber linebacker other than DeAndre Levy and they’ve shown a lot of interest in Bruce Carter.

76. San Francisco 49ers- QB Ricky Stanzi (Iowa)

Is Ricky Stanzi an ideal fit for their scheme? No. But, they missed out on a quarterback in rounds 1 and 2 and need to do something. Alex Smith and Troy Smith aren’t the long term answers and if they pass on him their options will be limited to major projects like Pat Devlin, Tyrod Taylor, Josh Portis, or Nathan Enderle, or someone like Greg McElroy who lacks upside.

I don’t think Jim Harbaugh will see settling for Stanzi as the end of the world. Harbaugh really seems to want to give Alex Smith a chance to be their starter next year, which makes sense as Smith is a former #1 overall pick and Harbaugh is an offensive minded coach, who will think he can get the most out of Smith.

Besides, the 49ers are in a very awkward spot to draft a quarterback this year. Newton and Gabbert will probably be gone by the time they pick at 7. In the 2nd round, they pick after Buffalo, Cincinnati, Arizona, Tennessee, Washington, and Minnesota. Their only chance at a quarterback in the first 2 rounds will probably be trading up and, in a weak quarterback class, I can’t see them doing that given that they already have Alex Smith.

77. Denver Broncos- RB Taiwan Jones (Eastern Washington)

John Fox had a two headed running attack with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in Carolina. In Denver he has an injury prone Knowshon Moreno and a bunch of scrubs. The very old fashioned, conservative John Fox is going to want to build up his running game after he solidifies the defensive line.

Taiwan Jones was a dynamic running back for Division I-AA championship winning Eastern Washington, averaging 7.9 YPC on the season last year and also showing good hands out of the backfield. He ran a 4.29 at his Pro Day, conjuring up memories of Chris Johnson, another small school burner, who went from 2008 1st round pick to 2000 yard rusher in 2009. Jones reminds me more of Felix Jones or CJ Spiller, not an every down back, but a dynamic player who has a role in the league.

78. Dallas Cowboys- OT James Brewer (Indiana)

They passed on Tyron Smith at 9 in the first, opting to trade down, because they can get a solid right tackle in the mid rounds. James Brewer, at 320, has the size they like in an offensive lineman, and can be an upgrade over Marc Colombo, who is done, at right tackle.

79. Denver Broncos- OLB Mason Foster (Washington)

DJ Williams is a very talented player at one outside linebacker spot, but they need someone opposite him.

80. Jacksonville Jaguars- CB Marcus Gilchrist (Clemson)

Some more secondary help for their 32nd ranked pass defense. Gilchrist will allow them to move Derek Cox to nickel back ASAP, which should be a goal of this team’s, as Cox is not very good. They’ve shown a lot of interest in Gilchrist this offseason and he fits what they look for in a draft pick. He might not be a 3rd round pick in most people’s books, but as we’ve seen before, the Jaguars have a very different draft board from most teams.

81. Oakland Raiders- G James Carpenter (Alabama)

The Raiders need more help for their offensive line this year. Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell are promising as tackles, but overall they gave up 43 sacks last year and their problems had a lot to do with their interior blocking.

82. San Diego Chargers- MLB Casey Matthews (Oregon)

Their top 3 inside linebackers are all free agents. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem. Worst case scenario is they’d only be able to resign one before the draft and he’d be paired with 2010 3rd round pick Donald Butler and they’d only have to use a late rounder on some depth. But there’s a very good chance that free agency happens AFTER the draft this year, thanks to the CBA issue. With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, I don’t think they risk potentially going into 2011 with only the linebackers that they currently have under contract.

83. New York Giants- TE Luke Stocker (Tennessee)

Kevin Boss isn’t a terrible player, but he’s not great either so if a prospect like Luke Stocker falls into their laps here in the 3rd round, they could take him with hopes of him becoming the long term solution at tight end.

84. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Rashad Carmichael (Virginia Tech)

I expect the Buccaneers to go cornerback fairly early this year. Aqib Talib is facing 5 years in jail. Ronde Barber will probably retire after next season. Elbert Mack is best off as a nickelback. Myron Lewis is a 2010 3rd round pick, but he’s still developing and he can also play safety for them if necessary, another need of theirs.

85. Washington Redskins- NT Jerrell Powe (Mississippi)

Albert Haynesworth was supposed to be their nose tackle in their new 3-4 defense. That didn’t happen.

86. Kansas City Chiefs- RLB Chris Carter (Fresno State)

Mike Vrabel is done. He didn’t manage a single sack last season. They need a 2nd option at rush linebacker opposite Tamba Hali.

87. Indianapolis Colts- RB Shane Vereen (California)

The Colts couldn’t do anything on the ground when Joseph Addai was hurt last year and chances are he’ll be hurt again this year, if history is any indication. Best case scenario, Addai stays healthy and Vereen compliments him with his speed. Worst case scenario, Vereen carries the load when Addai’s hurt and the disappointing Donald Brown spells him from time to time. Vereen fits their history of drafting complimentary offensive players for Peyton Manning early.

88. New Orleans Saints- DE Jeremy Beal (Oklahoma)

Some are saying Beal will fall out of the first 2 days after running a 5.14 40 at The Combine. They said the same thing about Brandon Spikes and his 5+ 40 last year and the Patriots bailed him out in round 2 and he turned into a decent contributor in his rookie year. Someone will bail out Beal.

89. San Diego Chargers- OT Marcus Gilbert (Florida)

Gilbert was very physically impressive at The Combine. He’ll get some round 3 looks as a right tackle and the Chargers need one. Jeromey Clary isn’t a very good right tackle and he’s a free agent anyway. They like Brandyn Dombrowski, but he’s inexperienced and with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, they can use one on some competition.

90. Baltimore Ravens- 3-4 DE Jarvis Jenkins (Clemson)

The Ravens had just 27 sacks last year with 11 of those coming from Terrell Suggs and 5.5 of those coming from Haloti Ngata. That means the rest of the team combined for 11.5 sacks. That’s not good. They need to add a 3rd pass rushing threat and have expressed interest in doing so. Jenkins can replace Cory Redding, who managed just 2.5 sacks last year.

91. Atlanta Falcons- TE Lance Kendricks (Wisconsin)

Tony Gonzalez doesn’t have much left in the tank. He turned 35 this offseason and only managed more than 4 catches in 2 games in the second half of the season, including his one catch effort in their playoff loss to Green Bay. He’ll probably retire after his contract is up in 2012 so the Falcons need to be prepared.

92. New England Patriots- CB Johnny Patrick (Louisville)

They can’t afford to let Darius Butler or Kyle Arrington start again next year if there’s an injury to one of their starters again. Patrick provides them insurance and depth at a crucial position. He’s also a great fit for what they look for in a defensive back.

93. Chicago Bears- DT Terrell McClain (South Florida)

Tommie Harris is gone so they’ll need a new defensive tackle. They’ve shown a lot of interest in McClain, a great fit for their scheme.

94. New York Jets- WR Edmond Gates (Abilene Christian)

They’re probably going to try to get another pass rusher to replace Jason Taylor here, but I can’t give them one without reaching so they’ll have to settle for a receiver. Brad Smith, Braylon Edwards, and Santonio Holmes are all free agents. I doubt they’ll be able to resign all 3, especially given how many free agents they also have on the defensive side of the ball. Gates allows them to maintain their receiver depth and is a good value at this point.

95. Pittsburgh Steelers- CB Brandon Burton (Utah)

Burton has the size that Pittsburgh likes out of its corners and he is a great fit for the scheme. They desperately need cornerback help. Teams that can spread and neutralize their blitz have a field day on their secondary. We saw it against New Orleans. We saw it against New England. And we definitely saw it in the Super Bowl against Green Bay.

96. Green Bay Packers- OT Chris Hairston (Clemson)

Chad Clifton is probably done after his deal runs out after the 2013 season. He’s also not the sturdiest player either, dealing with multiple injuries in recent years. The plan is to move Bryan Bulaga, a 2010 1st rounder, to left tackle when Clifton can’t play there anymore. Then, they’d need a new right tackle and I’m not sold on TJ Lang. Hairston gives them another option on the right side.

97. Carolina Panthers- DT Jurrell Casey (USC)

The Panthers defense wasn’t the big problem last year. Yeah, they ranked 26th in points allowed, but considering all their injuries and the fact that the offense couldn’t keep them off the field, that’s not so bad. However, defensive tackle is a huge need for them. They’ve got next to nothing at the position.

2011 2nd Round

1-16 17-32 2nd Round 3rd Round 4th Round 5th Round 6th Round 7th Round

33. Miami Dolphins- QB Colin Kaepernick (Nevada)

Trade:

New England receives pick 2-7 (510) and pick 4-14 (74)

Miami receives pick 2-1 (580)

Miami moves again, this time up, to secure Colin Kaepernick, leapfrogging Buffalo, Cincinnati, Arizona, and Denver, all who have shown interest in quarterbacks, to do so. At the price of a 4th rounder, it’s worth it. New England, meanwhile, moves down again, as they always seem to. They don’t feel there are any players they want here that can’t be had at 39.

34. Buffalo Bills- TE Kyle Rudolph (Notre Dame)

The Bills pass on another quarterback here, passing on Andy Dalton after passing on Blaine Gabbert in the first. Adam Schefter seems to think that they aren’t going to take a quarterback early, instead going with Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2011 with a better supporting cast. Normally I wouldn’t agree with this decision, but this quarterback class is so bad, and so many teams need quarterbacks, it doesn’t make any sense to reach for a quarterback. Waiting until 2012 seems like the smart move. Yes, I did just say the word “Bills” and “smart move” in the same sentence. Rudolph gives them a much needed upgrade at tight end. Their leading receiver at tight end last year had 12 catches for 111 yards. That’s not good.

35. Cincinnati Bengals- QB Andy Dalton (TCU)

Carson Palmer’s not walking through that door. Some might argue that’s a good thing. Dalton is an excellent fit for their west coast offense under new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and the Bengals have predictably shown a lot of interest in him this offseason.

36. Denver Broncos- DT Marvin Austin (North Carolina)

Again building that defensive line, they need more than one upgrade at defensive tackle, where they have next to nothing currently. Getting Nick Fairley, Da’Quan Bowers, and Marvin Austin allows them to shore up their defensive line and still have a couple picks in the 3rd round to work with. Remember, they also have Tennessee’s 2nd rounder in 2012 and a trade chip in Kyle Orton. It’s fine if they don’t fill all their needs this offseason. This isn’t a one year rebuilding project, unless Tim Tebow becomes an elite quarterback in his 2nd season. This is going to be a long term thing, at least two years.

37. Cleveland Browns- DE Adrian Clayborn (Iowa)

They desperately need help on their new 4 man line. Their top 2 defensive ends going into next season are Matt Roth, who hasn’t played in a 4-3 as a pro, and Marcus Bernard, who is too small to play in the trenches. Besides, they only managed 29 sacks last season anyway so pass rushers were a need before they switched schemes. Concerns about Clayborn’s Erb Palsy could drop him into the 2nd round, but not very far into it given how in demand pass rushers are.

38. Arizona Cardinals- CB Jimmy Smith (Colorado)

Character problems drop Smith out of the first round, not his lack of talent. Smith is a top 15 talent at cornerback and the Cardinals get him here at 38. Not only does he fill a big need for a team that ranked 25th against the pass last year, but his size at 6-2 fits what they like in a cornerback. This would be a no brainer pick for them in this situation.

39. New England Patriots- OT Benjamin Ijalana (Villanova)

After moving down 6 spots, the Patriots take Benjamin Ijalana. Ijalana can play right tackle or left tackle for them and gives them a bookend opposite Sebastian Vollmer, wherever they decide to line him up. Matt Light is over 30 and wants a long term deal and I just don’t see him getting it. That’s not the Patriot way.

40. Dallas Cowboys- S Rahim Moore (UCLA)

Alan Ball struggled in his first year at free safety and it’s probably his last. He couldn’t cover and at 185 pounds he was too small to do anything too positive against the run either. They’ll look for replacements through the draft.

41. Washington Redskins- WR Torrey Smith (Maryland)

The Redskins got their quarterback, Jake Locker, by trading down in the first. If history is any indication, this pick will be an offensive player and given their need at wide receiver, I think a wideout like Torrey Smith makes the most sense. Santana Moss is a free agent and wants to go to a contender, while Anthony Armstrong could be upgraded even if Moss were resigned.

42. Houston Texans- CB Brandon Harris (Miami)

They may have concerns about taking a corner in the first round for the 2nd straight year, but they’ll take one at some point. They ranked 31st against the pass and their 2010 #2 corner Glover Quin is likely going to be moving to free safety in 2011.

43. Minnesota Vikings- OT Marcus Cannon (TCU)

Another team that took a quarterback in the first that will likely be looking offense in the 2nd to build around their franchise quarterback. Marcus Cannon can play right tackle for them if they chose to move Phil Loadholt to guard or Cannon could also play guard.

44. Detroit Lions- CB Aaron Williams (Texas)

BPA here also fills a major need as the Lions ranked 26th versus the pass despite 44 sacks. The Lions have shown a lot of interest in Aaron Williams, who could be anywhere from the 3rd to the 6th cornerback off the board this year.

45. San Francisco 49ers- 3-4 DE Christian Ballard (Iowa)

The 49ers passed on Nick Fairley for Robert Quinn at 7, but they take their 3-4 end here. Isaac Sopoaga has played significant snaps for them for 6 years at end and has never managed more than 1.5 sacks in a season. Ballard would be a big upgrade as a pass rusher.

46. Miami Dolphins- RB Mikel Leshoure (Illinois)

Instead of taking Mark Ingram at 15, they move around a little and get Colin Kaepernick and another talented running back in Mikel Leshoure. They also moved up in the 3rd round a little and had to give up their 4th round pick, but I think Dolphins fans would rather have this scenario than just taking Ingram, not filling their quarterback need at all, and keeping their 4th rounder.

47. St. Louis Rams- DT Stephen Paea (Oregon State)

I suspect Steve Spagnuolo is trying to coach up one of the late round ends he took last year to be James Hall’s future replacement, which is why I can’t see them using an early pick on a defensive end. Defensive tackle is a different story. They have nothing after the 34 year old Fred Robbins at defensive tackle and Spags love pass rushers, especially interior pass rushers.

48. Oakland Raiders- CB Ras-I Dowling (Virginia)

Ras-I Dowling ran a 4.37 at 6-1 197. In Al Davis’ mind, this makes him the 2nd greatest cornerback of all time, 2nd to Stanford Routt that is.

49. Jacksonville Jaguars- S Quinton Carter (Oklahoma State)

Adding a defensive end in the first is not going to be enough to upgrade their pass defense. They need actual upgrades in the secondary. Carter is a high character, hard working kid, who Jaguars GM Gene Smith will value higher than most teams.

50. San Diego Chargers- WR Jonathan Baldwin (Pittsburgh)

I think Baldwin could be a potential surprise possibility at 18 in the first round for the Chargers, so I think they’d jump at the opportunity to get him here at 50. The long term futures of Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson are both up in the air and at 6-4 Baldwin has the size the Chargers love in a receiver. He has first round talent, but I could see him slipping as a result of work ethic and character issues.

51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DE Allen Bailey (Miami)

Another defensive end? Why not. They’ve managed just 54 sacks in the last 2 years combined so it’s clearly their biggest need. They went back to back with defensive tackles in the first 2 rounds last year when it was their biggest need and they also doubled up on wide receivers. They spent their first rounder on a right end in Justin Houston. Allen Bailey can be their left end.

52. New York Giants- MLB Martez Wilson (Illinois)

The Giants love taking best available and Wilson, the consensus top middle linebacker prospect in this class, represents that at this point in the draft. Linebacker is a major need of theirs as they have questions both inside and out. Wilson can play both inside and outside, but will likely be put at middle linebacker, their biggest need and his more natural position, first.

53. Indianapolis Colts- G Stefen Wisniewski (Penn State)

Another offensive line upgrade for the Colts. This pick just makes too much sense. He’s a perfect fit for their scheme and he fits what they look for in terms of character. He fills a major need and fits their trend of going offense early. Finally, he’s one of the best available here.

54. Washington Redskins- RLB Sam Acho (Texas)

Again, this team has so many needs that they can just take BPA at every pick, with a few exceptions. Here they take Acho to play opposite Brian Orakpo. Andre Carter is a free agent and he also struggled mightily in the 3-4 last year. Acho is a natural fit for the 3-4 and a capable replacement for Carter.

55. Kansas City Chiefs- WR Titus Young (Boise State)

No wide receiver other than Dwayne Bowe caught more than 22 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown last year. Wide receiver has to be their #1 offseason priority. They need to get Matt Cassel some better receivers if they want their big money investment to lead them deep into the playoffs ever. Young, who ran a 4.43 at The Combine and plays faster, is the perfect speed compliment to Dwayne Bowe, more of a possession receiver.

56. New Orleans Saints- RB Ryan Williams (Virginia Tech)

The Saints have a laundry list of questions at the running back position from can Pierre Thomas stay healthy to will Reggie Bush return to why the hell would they give Julius Jones and DeShawn Wynn key carries in a playoff game. Given those questions, Williams is way too talented to pass on at this point.

57. Seattle Seahawks- G Rodney Hudson (Florida State)

Rodney Hudson helps improve their horrendous run blocking. They didn’t run block well at all, with the exception of on that Marshawn Lynch run (that was really the only time all year they did anything right on the ground). Hudson fits the scheme like a glove and after taking Ryan Mallett in the first round, it makes a lot of sense that they’d go offense here.

58. Baltimore Ravens- WR Randall Cobb (Kentucky)

The Ravens brought in Donte Stallworth, Anquan Boldin, and TJ Houshmandzadeh last offseason to give Joe Flacco the weapons he needed to take this team to the Super Bowl in his 3rd season. However, those receivers all underachieved and, one might even argue, cost them the game against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. The problem was they brought in a bunch of old, veteran, possession receivers who couldn’t stretch the field to compliment Derrick Mason who is also an old, veteran, possession receiver who can’t stretch the field.

They need to add a young burner, like Pittsburgh has with Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders, this offseason if they want Flacco to take that next step. That’s what Titus Young can do for them.

59. Atlanta Falcons- WR Jerrel Jernigan (Troy)

Roddy White is a great receiver with 371 catches in the last 4 years and 115 last year, but he’s not a burner, someone who can stretch the field. That’s what they need opposite him. They didn’t complete a pass longer than 46 yards last year and their lack of big play ability really hurt them in games against Philadelphia and Green Bay, two explosive offenses that can score in a hurry. They couldn’t keep up and lost both games by double digits.

If they want to make it to the Super Bowl, they’ll probably have to get through those 2 teams, and besides, of all the final 8 teams last year, their receiving corps are the thinnest. Jernigan and his 4.32 speed will be a huge asset to Matt Ryan and company.

60. New England Patriots- WR Leonard Hankerson (Miami)

If their loss to the Jets proves one thing, it’s that they miss Randy Moss. Well maybe not crazy Randy Moss who Tom Brady had to worry about getting the football. They got better after trading him away for a reason. Brady was free to throw to whoever he wanted and his favorite target was the open one. That doesn’t mean they don’t need a deep threat, especially one with size like Hankerson.

Hankerson had good size speed numbers at The Combine with a 4.45 at 6-2 209. He dominated The Senior Bowl, and should have been MVP as he was the reason Christian Ponder’s numbers looked good enough to win him MVP. He also was very productive at Miami last season with 72 catches for 1156 yards and 13 touchdowns running more pro style routes than normal, with inconsistencies at the quarterback position. He’s no one year wonder either as he produced in 2009 with 45 catches for 801 yards and 6 touchdowns. He’s the real deal.

61. San Diego Chargers- RLB Jabaal Sheard (Pittsburgh)

The Chargers probably won’t draft a rush linebacker in the first round, not willing to admit their mistake with 2009 1st round pick Larry English who has not panned out. However, with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, they’ll take one at some point.

62. Chicago Bears- CB Davon House (New Mexico State)

The NFL is a reactionary league as much as it is a copycat league. The Bears’ biggest rivals are the Green Bay Packers, who beat them in the NFC Championship to advance to the Super Bowl, which they ended up winning. Undoubtedly, they are going to be trying to build their team such that it can beat the Packers. Adding more depth at cornerback to counter the Packers’ depth at receiver is necessary to do that.

63. Pittsburgh Steelers- G Orlando Franklin (Miami)

The Steelers need depth up front, especially versatile depth that can play multiple positions. They need help at both guard and tackle and Franklin can play either position, though the general consensus seems to be that he’s better off at guard.

64. Green Bay Packers- G Danny Watkins (Baylor)

Danny Watkins showed at the Senior Bowl that he’s ready to play right now. He might be the best technician of any offensive lineman in this class. He’s that good. He’s also 26, which might scare some teams away. The Packers won’t mind as they’re built to win now. Watkins is an upgrade over Daryn Colledge, the weak link on their offensive line, who is also a free agent this offseason.
