Tom Brady improved to 26-11 in his career against teams with a better record than his with his win over the Texans last week. That’s unreal. The Patriots are +198 on the season. The 49ers are closest at +132. They already have wins over the Texans and Broncos and if they beat the 49ers this week, they’ll have wins against 3 of the other 4 top-5 NFL teams and will be convincing favorites.

Nothing has changed. I still feel this week’s Patriots/49ers game will be a Super Bowl preview and I think the winner will be the Super Bowl favorite. Right now, the Patriots are the favorites to win the game and to eventually go all the way, but you can’t count this team out, obviously

The Texans can win out pretty easily because I don’t think the Colts are as good as their record and finish 14-2 and get the #1 seed (their other game is against Minnesota). That would probably send the Patriots to Houston in the AFC Championship, but after the Patriots showed them who the big boys in the AFC are, it’s hard to believe they’d win that game. They could. Teams are actually 8-4 ATS in the playoffs avenging a loss of 21+ or more in the regular season (though 4-8 SU), but the Patriots look like the inferior team right now.

It’s not so much concerning that the Falcons lost in Carolina than it is that no one was really surprised. The Patriots lost to the Cardinals. The 49ers lost to the Rams. The Giants lost to the Redskins twice last season. But it wasn’t surprising because they’ve been playing inferior teams close all season. It was only a matter of time before one of them beat them. I still don’t believe they can turn it on when it counts in the playoffs and win 3 straight against playoff caliber opponents. They have arguably the toughest test of the season this week at home for the Giants.

The Broncos are on an 8 game winning streak, but the Patriots control their own destiny for the #2 seed and if they beat the 49ers this weekend and I think they will win that one. The Broncos have their own huge game this week in Baltimore, which will probably be for the #3 seed if the Patriots win. It looks like the Broncos will be going to Foxboro in the AFC Divisional round for another Brady/Manning game. The Patriots won the first game in Foxboro and they’ll definitely be favored to win the 2nd game.

The Seahawks will control their own destiny to the #2 seed if the 49ers lose in New England this weekend and the Packers lose 1 more game. That’s very possible and if that happens, they’ll just need to win out and two of their final 3 games are at home, where they look pretty unbeatable. I don’t think even the 49ers could go in there and win. They’ll have to avoid another trip up against an inferior team on the road this week in Buffalo (a la St. Louis, Detroit, Miami, and Arizona), but if they can do that, I think this is this year’s team that goes from out of the playoffs to a first round bye. A first round bye would assure them at least one home playoff game and that’s no somewhere if you want to go if you’re a team like the 49ers, Packers, or Bears.

With the Ravens losing to the Redskins, the Bengals and Steelers had great opportunities to move within a game in the division, but both blew them and right now it looks like Baltimore is going to be locked into the division lead, which means they’ll get a home playoff game and they are awfully tough at home. They face the Broncos in what could decide the #3 seed this week, before hosting the Giants and the Bengals. The schedule isn’t easy, which is why it’s so huge that the Steelers and Bengals lost. I think the team they least want to see in the first round is the Steelers, who already won in Baltimore with their backup quarterback, but they should get at least 1 playoff win. I don’t know if they can go on the road and win in either New England or Houston though.

Robert Griffin should be good to go this week against the Browns. With games against the Browns, Eagles, and Cowboys in their final 3, they will be favored in all 3 of their last 3 games, while the Giants will only be favored in 1. Chalk gets them this division at 10-6 and even if they win out and the Giants pull one upset against either the Ravens or Falcons, the Redskins will still win the division on their divisional record tiebreaker. That would get them a home playoff game, in which they’d likely be favored. It might sound weird, but chalk gets this team to the divisional record, which I why I have them 8th.

I’ve questioned if the Packers would make the playoffs in the past because they were so banged up and not playing well and because the NFC was so loaded. One team every year goes from a 1st round bye to out of the playoffs. Well, they didn’t play well against the Lions either, struggling to beat a 4 win team at home, but with Tampa Bay losing to the Buccaneers and essentially falling out of the playoffs, the Packers are essentially locked into a playoff spot right now, meaning this year will be an exception (it also looks like the first year in 18 years that we won’t have 5 new playoff teams).

Though I’ve questioned them in the past, I’ve always maintained they’d be dangerous if they made the playoffs and got healthy before then and it looks like they will. I’m not disappointed or anything. After all, they were my Super Bowl pick before the season on a +600 money line. They can certainly do that, but it’ll all depend on matchups and seeding. They face Chicago, Tennessee, and Minnesota in their final 3 games and should go at least 2-1, meaning they’d finish with an 11-5 record, but that could put them anywhere from the 2nd to the 5th seed. This week’s game with the Bears could decide the division.

The Bears are still one of two candidates to go from out of the playoffs to a first round bye this season. Seattle is more likely, however, but I still think they can win at home against the Packers next week and win out against Arizona and Detroit, going 11-5 and losing the division on a tiebreaker. They’ll go to Washington in the first round in this scenario and I give the slight edge to the home team.
