Eagles to trade Darryl Tapp before week 1?

Darryl Tapp is one of the more underrated players in the league and was a part of the Eagles’ talented and deep defensive end rotation last year. He had 3 sacks, 6 quarterback hits, and 13 quarterback pressures on 172 pass rush snaps, a rate of 12.8%. He was equally good against the run. He didn’t qualify for ProFootballFocus’ rankings because he didn’t play enough snaps (306 in all), but among all 4-3 defensive end (including non-qualified) he ranked 19th.

However, with 2010 1st round pick Brandon Graham expected to play a role this season coming off a knee surgery and rookie 2nd round pick Vinny Curry coming in, Tapp has become expendable. According to the Wilmington News Journal, the Eagles are expected to trade Tapp before week 1. This makes a lot of sense because their other option would probably be just outright cutting him and his 2.575 million dollar salary.

Because of his talent, he might be able to land them a late round pick in a trade. Teams seeking defensive end depth like the Cleveland Browns, the New Orleans Saints, the Tennessee Titans, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be interested. If the Eagles are unable to trade him and have to cut him, those aforementioned teams, as well as possibly several others, make sense as a destination for him. He won’t last long on the open market.

Eagles’ Mike Patterson unlikely to play in 2012

Eagles’ Head Coach Andy Reid admitted that defensive tackle Mike Patterson will be out for a while and could miss the entire season, according to CSN Philly. The Eagles have placed him on the non-football injury list, which functions the same way as the PUP, meaning Patterson can be activated after week 6, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Patterson had surgery on his brain to remove a malformed vein (AVM) at the beginning of the offseason in January and while they expected him to be back by this point, it shouldn’t be surprising that he isn’t. This isn’t exactly something you can just rub some dirt on and go back out there and tough it out. Sadly, this could be a career threatening injury for the talented soon to be 29 year old.

The Eagles prepared themselves for this scenario by using a 1st round pick on Fletcher Cox. Cox could be the starter opposite Cullen Jenkins, but even if he isn’t, he’ll see a large role. The Eagles love rotation on the defensive line so Jenkins, Cox, Derek Landri, and Antonio Dixon will all see significant snaps. Even without Patterson, the Eagles are as stacked on the defensive line as any team in the league, but clearly this situation is bigger than football.

King Dunlap to be Eagles’ left tackle?

When the Eagles lost left tackle Jason Peters, presumably for the season, with a torn Achilles in March, they immediately went out and signed Demetress Bell, formerly Demetrius Bell of the Buffalo Bills. They took a risk by signing Bell to a 5 year, 34.5 million dollar deal, but only 3.25 million of that, his 2012 salary, was guaranteed and they got that money by taking it from Jason Peters, who was in violation of his contract when he injured himself. Bell, however, has only played more than 8 games once in his 4 year career.

Bell played very well when healthy for the Bills last year, as the 2008 7th round pick allowed just 1 sack, 1 quarterback hits, and 7 quarterback pressures, while not committing a penalty in essentially 6 starts protecting the blindside of Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, despite his big guaranteed salary for the 2012 season and his strong play last season, it appears that Bell has lost the starting left tackle job to King Dunlap in Philadelphia. Dunlap has been working with the 1st team all throughout Training Camp and the preseason and probably will start there week 1, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It’s definitely a head scratching move, but the Eagles made it clear earlier this offseason that Bell was being brought in to compete with former Peters backup Dunlap for Peters’ old job and he seems to have lost. Maybe he wasn’t a good fit for Howard Mudd’s scheme. Maybe he’s not fully healthy. Maybe Dunlap just impressed and beat him out. I don’t know. What I do know is that Dunlap is inexperienced as the 2008 7th round pick has started just 7 career games (3 at left tackle, 3 at right tackle, and 1 at left guard), though he hasn’t played badly.

The Eagles will obviously be hoping that continues. Left tackle might not be the blindside for Michael Vick, a left handed quarterback, but it is for backup Nick Foles, who figures to see a few starts this season because of how injury prone Vick is. They’ll need good play from that spot, but I trust Howard Mudd to coach him up and he definitely had something to do with the decision for Dunlap to start. As for Bell, he’ll almost definitely be one and done with the Eagles. He won’t see his 9.5 million dollar salary in 2013. He likely wouldn’t have seen it either way, unless Peters couldn’t bounce back, but this pretty much seals it.

Nick Foles to win primary backup job for Eagles?

When Mike Kafka, the 2010 4th round pick who was expected to be the Eagles’ primary backup this season, went down with a hand injury, it opened the door for Nick Foles, a 3rd round pick rookie originally viewed as a developmental 3rd string quarterback for this season, to become the Eagles’ primary backup. Foles has been just that in the Eagles’ first 2 preseason games and has definitely impressed, leading all quarterbacks in passing rating for the preseason, completing 24 of 38 (63.2%) for 361 (9.5 YPA) yards, 4 touchdowns, and an interception, a QB rating of 118.4. Foles has definitely given himself a strong chance to remain the Eagles’ 2nd string quarterback when games count for real.

Foles has come in for an injured Michael Vick in each of the Eagles’ first 2 preseason games as well, as minor hand and rib injuries have knocked him out of the first two preseason games respectively. He’ll be fine for week 1, but it’s just a reminder that Vick is arguably the most injury prone quarterback in the league. In 9 seasons, he’s played all 16 games just once and it’s gotten worse as he’s gotten older. Now heading into his age 32 season, Vick has missed 7 games in the last 2 seasons combined.

Foles will start for Vick in the Eagles’ 3rd preseason game this week, as Vick is unlikely to play another preseason game, and, assuming Foles wins the job, he’ll probably have to make a few starts this season. If he does, the Eagles should be fine, as long as it’s not too extended of a period. He probably won’t play quite this well, but Andy Reid has a way of making quarterbacks look better than they are (Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, AJ Feeley, etc.).

Besides, he has arguably the best supporting cast in the league too as the Eagles possess a deep receiving corps, and top 5, if not top 3 running back, and a still above average offensive line, even after the loss of Jason Peters. Defensively, they have one of the best defensive lines in the league, one of the top cornerbacks in the league (Nnamdi Asomugha) and another one with some bounce back potential (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie). Their safeties and linebackers aren’t great, but they’ll be better than they were last season. If anything, Vick is what’s holding up this team.

In the long term, Foles projects as a possible successor to Michael Vick or possible trade chip for Andy Reid. Flipping quarterbacks that he makes look better than they are to unsuspecting teams is one of Reid’s favorite things to do (cut to Cardinals fans nodding sadly). Kafka, meanwhile, will find himself on the roster bubble come final cuts and will need the Eagles to keep 3 quarterbacks to make the roster.

Eagles’ DeSean Jackson admits to not giving 100% last season

DeSean Jackson had a down season last year, catching just 58 passes for 961 yards and 4 touchdowns, his lowest yardage total since his rookie year in 2008, on an overall disappointing Eagles team. Many theorized that Jackson was dogging it because he was unhappy with his contract situation and Jackson essentially admitted as much earlier this week, saying “I let it get to me, even though I tried not to let it. I was trying to protect myself from getting hurt; now I’m just giving it all.”

While it’s definitely concerning that Jackson would give less than 100% over a whole season, it’s a testament to his talent that he was able to produce numbers better than most receivers even when he wasn’t giving it his all. Now that he has his contract situation under control, after the Eagles gave him a 5 year, 47 million dollar deal earlier this offseason, Jackson should be back to his 2009-2010 form. During those two seasons, he posted lines of 62/1156/9 and 47/1056/6. Though he has Jeremy Maclin to steal plenty of targets opposite him, Jackson is not exactly a volume receiver with a career 17.8 YPC.

Philadelphia Eagles Potential Breakout Player of 2012: Brandon Graham

The great thing about the NFL is that there are so many positions that every year, there is almost always at least one player who has a breakout year on every team, no matter how good or bad the team is. This is one part in a 32 part segment detailing one potential breakout player for the 2012 NFL season on each NFL team. For the Philadelphia Eagles, that player is defensive end Brandon Graham.

When the Eagles traded up to 13 in the 2010 NFL Draft to grab Brandon Graham, they thought they were getting a safe, reliable pass rusher who could be a solid starter for them and would likely not bust. Now, two years later, they have a player who has played just 538 snaps in 2 seasons and who is best known for being the guy the Eagles took instead of Jason Pierre-Paul, the high upside, risky prospect who the Giants drafted 2 spots later and turned into a Pro Bowler.

Graham has been a bust thus far in his career, but largely for reasons out of his control. Graham suffered a nasty knee injury late in 2010, which required microfracture surgery and cost him the rest of that seasons and limited him to just 58 snaps in 2011. Before the injury, however, Graham had a bright future. With 3 sacks, 7 quarterback hits, and 26 quarterback pressures on 273 pass rush snaps in 2010, Graham had a very impressive 13.2 pass rush rate as part of the Eagles defensive end rotation. Despite his limited playing time, Graham actually ranked 20th on ProFootballFocus among 4-3 defensive ends as pass rushers in 2010. Among eligible players, his 10.8 pass rush efficiency rate was 13th that season.

2011 was basically a completely lost year for him. He barely played due to injury and when he did play, he wasn’t effective because he was out of shape and he had lost his starting job to Jason Babin, who the Eagles signed in the 2011 offseason, after Graham’s injury. The Eagles used a 2nd round pick on Vinny Curry in the 2012 NFL Draft, but have not given up on Graham, according to a report by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Graham seems to have used the Curry selection as motivation as he has shed weight and is now back to the 265 pounds he was at during 2010 and before the draft.

Graham won’t beat out either of the starters, Jason Babin and Trent Cole, for a starting job. Those two combined for 29 sacks last year and they’re not going anywhere any time soon. However, the Eagles love rotation on the defensive line. Even last year, as good as Babin and Cole played, they combined for just 1360 snaps played and reserves played a combined 624 snaps at defensive end. There’s a reason they spent a 2nd round pick on Vinny Curry. That’s how much they value defensive end depth.

Graham definitely has the ability to beat out Curry for the top reserve job and if he does that and stays healthy and in shape, he could see a good amount of playing time and become one of the better rotational ends in the NFL. He may have only had 3 sacks in 2010, but he played well enough to have 5 or 6 sacks. He was just unlucky. He could do that or even better this season. The Eagles already had 50 sacks last season, tied for the league lead. With Fletcher Cox coming in and Graham having the potential for a breakout year, the Eagles should match or even exceed that number in 2012.

Eagles’ Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie “just happy” to be playing outside this season

In an interview with Wilmington News Journal, Eagles’ cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie says he’s “just happy” to be playing outside this season. In his first season with the Eagles, DRC really struggled playing primarily on the slot, allowing 25 completions on 42 attempts (59.5%) for 354 yards (8.4 YPA), no touchdowns, and no interceptions, while deflecting 6 passes and not committing a penalty. He was especially bad on the slot, allowing 17 completions on 23 attempts for 284 yards.

Now playing full time outside with Asante Samuel gone, DRC should have a bounce back year, especially in a contract year. Remember, he was a 2008 1st round pick and a 2009 Pro-Bowler. With Nnamdi Asomugha expected to have a bounce back year now that he’ll be playing more man coverage and less zone, and with Brandon Boykin, a natural fit on the slot, the Eagles should improve over their 16th ranked pass defense in 2011, allowing 7.2 YPA, even without Asante Samuel. With a strong pass rush and improved linebacking corps, the Eagles should have one of the best defenses in the league.

Philadelphia Eagles 2013 Franchise Tag Candidates

CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

While I like DRC, a 2009 Pro-Bowler and 2008 1st round pick, to have a bounce back year in 2012, now that he’s no longer playing the slot and now that he’s motivated financially, the cornerback tender is one of the most expensive tenders in the league, tied for 2nd highest in 2012 at 10.6 million. That type of money is normally only reserved for consistent, elite cornerbacks, which DRC is not.

Likelihood: Very unlikely

Indianapolis Colts trade CB Kevin Thomas and a 7th round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for MLB Moise Fukou and MLB Greg Lloyd

Trade for Indianapolis: The Colts needed middle linebacker depth after losing AJ Edds to a torn ACL earlier  this week, so they acquired Greg Lloyd and Moise Fukou from the Eagles. However, neither of these guys ever play and the Colts had to give up Kevin Thomas, which depletes their depth at cornerback even more. Thomas wasn’t very good last season, but he was a 2010 3rd round pick and he competing for the starting job with Justin King.

Now King will be given the starting job, which is bad because he was ProFootballFocus’ worst rated cornerback last season. They also have no depth at the position right now. Their top 3 cornerbacks will be Jerraud Powers, Justin King, and Cassius Vaughn this season. That’s going to be a dream for opposing quarterbacks.

It doesn’t make sense to give up on a 2010 3rd round pick and deplete your depth at an important position like cornerback just for two scarcely used linebackers. Linebacker is not nearly as important of a position and neither of these guys have any experience in a 3-4. They also surrendered a 7th round pick in the trade. Fukou and Lloyd might not have been worth a 7th round pick alone. You can find guys like that still available in free agency or on anyone’s practice squad.

Grade: C

Trade for Philadelphia: Neither of the guys they gave up were going to have any impact this season. In fact, they were both on the roster bubble. Thomas isn’t going to have much of an impact either, but it doesn’t hurt to have a little bit more cornerback depth and Thomas still has some upside as a 2010 3rd round pick, despite missing 2010 with injuries and struggling in 2011. They also picked up a 7th round pick. That’s not bad. They won this deal.

Grade: A

Panthers, Eagles interested in Jeremy Shockey

Jeremy Shockey is one of the biggest name free agents still available as we head into August. Last season, the 4-time Pro-Bowler (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) caught 37 passes for 455 yards and 4 touchdowns as a key contributor for a Panthers offense that used a lot of two-tight end sets with him and Greg Olsen. The Panthers really like the inexperienced Gary Barnidge to potentially take over Shockey’s old role.

However, they also haven’t ruled out bringing back Jeremy Shockey, even as he heads into his age 32 season, according to the Charlotte Observer. The Eagles are also another team that is interested and could bring him in for a visit. It wouldn’t be surprise me if a couple other teams were in on him. He’ll probably get signed sometime in the next week or so.
